Usually I'm pretty tedious with my grocery shopping and reread the labels I've already read a 1,000 times before, but I realized as I got to the checkout that I had forgotten cream of mushroom soup. I told my husband to go ahead and check out and I'd run and grab the soup.
I grab the very last can on the shelf, forgo reading the label, and manage to get back to the checkout right as my husband is ready to pay.
Last night I went to make mushroom casserole. I didn't check the label again. Made a huge portion of it. (Leftovers!) Gave myself a huge bowl full of the casserole. Ate one bite. Set down the bowl. Picked up the can. Read the label. Sugar. Threw out everything. Such a waste of money. My husband has gluten intolerance, so he wouldn't touch it even if he was starving.
I had Rold Gold Cheddar Pretzels for dinner instead (not healthy, but very delicious and the only Rold Gold pretzels that seem to be fructose-free). Around midnight I was reading and my blood sugar dropped very quickly. I ran out into the kitchen, ate olives, sweettarts, tortilla chips, and a glass of milk before forcing myself to stop. I was still ravenous, but I'm really trying to reign in my low blood sugar binge habits (not easy).
The cream of mushroom soup was an off brand (which was typically safe), but I happened to grab a can that was misplaced. It was the low-sodium, low-fat soup--which they tend to add sugar to make it taste less gross. It still tasted really gross--something like glue. It didn't taste sweet at all.
