Hi Everyone, I have HFI and had a baby 2 weeks ago who does not have HFI, I am currently breastfeeding but I am finding that he is constantly hungry needing a feed every 45 minutes throughout the night. I know that this could well be usual newborn behaviour and him getting into his routine but my other thought was that he is not getting the nutrients that he needs from my milk and is not being satisfied, he is however putting on weight which would suggest that he is doing alright. Has anyone else on here with HFI breastfed a non HFI baby? Does anyone have any tips or suggestions of extra vitamins or foods that I could take to help him? Thanks in advance for any advice, Kathryn x

Kathryn, Congratulations on your new baby! As far as I know your being HFi should have no effect on baby. Your milk should be as good and wholesome as any mother. Sometimes it takes a few weeks particularly with a first baby for your milk to beef up so to speak. I can only speak as a father of 4 not as a mother. Congratulations again and best wishes. Ps how do you already know your baby is not HFI?

Congratulations on your baby! I agree with Bill. It takes some time to get the milkproduction going. The best way is to give the baby milk when he ask for it. And in the beginning this can be very often. When you feel very insecure you could get advice from someone who is specialised in breastfeeding your child. In the Netherlands we have someone that is called a "lactatiekundige" (the translation I'm not sure of it says lactation). Your milk should be good. You could take a multivitamine if you can find one that is suitable for a HFI. That is also the advise for a woman without HFI.
I'm still breastfeeding my child. I'm not HFI, Nienke probably is. Best wishes and good luck.

Thanks everyone, it's good to know that HFI shouldn't make any difference. Things have started to calm down a bit already and he is not quite so hungry so regularly already, I am having to eat constantly to keep my calories and energy up but can't complain about that too much! Think I just needed a bit of reassurance that it wasn't HFI related and you have all put my mind at rest.
Thanks again Kathryn

Hi Katheryn,
I have HFI, and I breastfed both my non-HFI babies. There were times when it seems like they were eating constantly, but I think that is just typical newborn behavior. Hang in there! It's a lot of work!! Do keep up your multi-vitamin, and be sure to keep up your own food intake. It sounds like you're already doing these things. I don't think there would be any advice specific to an HFI mom (except to not consume fructose, of course).
