Impressive that there is more attention over there in America. Strange that she should eat tomatoes limited and not avoid.

Its amazing how many times i have heard people think tomatoes are ok, along with bananas! It may well be she still has some symptoms but they haven't realised it yet.

I think she's limited with tomatoes because she has DFI and not HFI. I would actually think her doctor should have told her to eliminate ALL fructose (including tomatoes) until she's back on the even keel--then maybe, a few months/years later try to add them in to see what a reaction she might have. Then again I guess the parents are just happy to have a diagnosis aside from "the flu".
Bananas are so evil. I want to eat them, yet I can't. I guess people think they're less sweet because they aren't juicy like other fruit? No idea.

It is good to see it in the news but disappointing that they didn't clarify that DFI and HFI are different. They said everyone can tolerate some fructose which is not true for HFI and they also didn't point out that stomachache and diarrhea are not the only symptoms that can result from FI. Since HFI is life-threatening if not diagnosed, it would have been better if they had listed it as separate from DFI, and had pointed out the differences in symptoms.

Just posted the following on the KY3 news web site, lets see if this gets some interest! :- Dr. Daniel Lustig is wrong. Not everyone can tolerate small amounts of Fructose. People born with HFI (Hereditary Fructose Intolerance) cannot metabolise Fructose. If Fructose is consumed by someone with HFI it can cause symptoms similar to Fructose Mal-adsorption (DFI) but usually far more dramatic with vomiting and Hypoglycaemia added in for good measure. Continued eating of Sugar and Fructose but can also lead to Liver and Kidney failure leading eventually to death. HFI is caused by a Genetic problem and is present in a ratio of between 1 in 25,000 to 1 in 50,000 people. The only way to live a "Normal" Life is to avoid anything tasting sweet and particularly anything containing Sucrose (table sugar) or Fructose. For more information on DFI or HFI go to the discussion board for HFI hfiinfo.proboards.com/index.cgiRegards Bill Armstrong Diagnosed HFI in 1981 info@fructose-intolerance.org
