Hi,
Im 21 years old and was recently diagnosed with fructose malabsorption. Thanks to a hydrogen breath test. Im wondering though, if i could be fructose intolerent.
Ive been sticking to a strict fodmaps diet. Ive been avoiding fructose and corn (it makes me sick), but Im still getting extremely sick.
This means. ridiculously bad headaches. im sleeping all the time day and night. often i dont have enough energy to sit up or stand up. extremely bad constipation. nausea. constant inability to think straight. very slow reaction times. shaking. Irritability and anger.
These things last days before they disappear. I am spending almost all my time sleeping and am constantly spitting up saliva.
I am, however, not vomiting. ever. But its still going on and is real bad. So any thoughts about what I said would be appreciated.
Its gotten to the point where i cant walk or leave the house or do anything. And Ive even ruled out SIBO thanks to some previous medication... Thanks.

I think you have answered your own question. Vegetables and fruit are loaded with fructose as are certain varieties of potato so chips can be bad also. Which "food maps" include vegetables and fruit for fructose malabsorption?? I suggest you bin them and use the Fructose free lists on links from this site. If you are positive on the Hydrogen Breath test you are unlikely to be HFI unless you are both, and I think the probabilities of that are less than winning the National Lottery 3 times in 3 weeks or something that sort of rare. One question I have to ask.. why COLD chips??? Their just Butt Nasty I'm assuming you are UK based by your references to Fish and Chips?

If you have trie the fodmap diet I read about from Australia then that could be why you are having problems. I have come to think there are several types of malabsorbtion and one type seems more like hfi and therefore better treated with nil fruit and veg to start. Your reaction sounds like my daughter, she is on a reaction at the moment and is spaced out in front of the telly.

Hello Shaun,
Your symptoms sound somewhat similar to those of Wilson's disease. This is a genetic disorder where excess copper is stored in the body's organs, including the brain and liver. Tests are easily done by a family physician and it is very treatable when caught early in a young person. Just a thought.

I had to remove most vegetables from my diet to feel well. I do best with rice, meat, dairy, russet potato, dextrose and small amounts of summer vegetables used mostly like garnish. I cook with chicken stock and small amounts of garlic, celery and shallots and lime juice. I do enjoy avocado, olives and capers.

As a more tolerant HFI than most I cannot take avocado although I find capers and olives OK others do not.
I can take celery raw but not cooked it become very sweet when cooked. potatoes can be a problems depending on variety but Pasta and rice (white) are fine for HFI.. and I presume fructose malabsorption.
Shallots I can only take in very small amounts and well cooked till the sugars have caramelised, even then I get bad guts for a few days afterwards.
What Fibre are you taking?
