My daughter may have HFI and we are doing a trial of eliminating fructose in her diet. I find that I can manage finding things for meals, but snacks are difficult! Can you all give me some ideas for safe snack foods? Thanks!!!

My daughter has HFI and her snacks are mostly pretzels (but check the ingredients as some are safe and some are not), chips, Triscuits, (there are also some other safe crackers but right now they escape me), peanuts, cheese puffs, potato sticks, homemade cookies, sugar free pudding, cheese, homemade ice cream, rice puffs cereal, some sugar free candy (again, check the ingredients).
If she wants to "dip" we use cream cheese or ranch dressing mix in sour cream, or make a velveeta cheese dip.
She also thinks dill pickles and olives are a great snack.

We tend to go everywhere with cream crackers, they do well as a snack with marmite or cheese spread, or just as they are. A bowl of instant porridge or Ready Brek does well for a quick filler too.

Pumpkin seeds have no fructose as well. Easy and fun snack to bring along. Can also grind them and make them into pumpkin seed butter. I can't have any nuts, so I will be getting a grinder to do this in the future.
Hope this helps. : )

I typically eat things that list their sugar content as 1 gram per serving or less. Saltines, cream crackers, cheetos, etc. The Laughing Cow triangle cheese is pretty good (I Like the swiss cheese flavor). I don't actually eat Velveeta. If I recall correctly, it contains three grams of sugar per serving. Personally I also find peanuts make me feel pretty awful, but I dont' know if this is a fructose thing or if they are just too fatty. Almond nuts work well for me and are a nutritious snack. I would be careful about sugar-free candy as some contain sorbitol.

Peanuts have fructose in them, in fact all nuts do, some seem to tolerate them but others don't.

I can't tolerate anything with sugar in it....other then glucose or galactose...so most foods are off limits to me. Not to mention I am also Lactose Intolerant. So I have been looking up foods and those that have no sugar, I try.

Go with Charie's suggestion. Peanuts are a NO NO as are all nuts, and to be safe so is anything made from "Confectionery Glucose" which can contain up to 40% "other sugars" and still be called 100% pure glucose! All Glucose in the USA (and most of the rest of the world) is made in the same factories (and in the same equipment) as High Fructose Corn syrup and Fructose itself, so contamination of even the best quality Glucose is VERY likely. You will not notice this as the Fructose effect will be masked by the very high dose of Glucose you will get. However you may feel "Fog brained" the next day or so. Eating more Glucose will clear this but could cause the following days "Fog Brained" effect and so on! The stock starch that is used in the manufacture of Glucose contains 4% sugar to start with and this is not removed in the manufacturing process, so it is impossible for ANY non medical grade Glucose to be Fructose free. It is essential that your daughter learns to reject anything tasting sweet, it is her only defence if she is to have as normal a life as is possible with HFI. You cannot trust labels on foods or on tins I have been recently going through the on-line information supplied by Walmart. Some of the items that claim not to have sugar in the analysis have sugar quite high up in the ingredient list! Other products made from identical ingredients, different brands, on the analysis panel one will say contains 4% sugar the other 0% which is right? So a set of finely tuned taste bugs are your ONLY defence!

I just reported akritishharma. They are not talking specifically about HFI. Cakes, cookies, nutrition cereal bars and frozen desserts are NOT HFI-SAFE. I'm pretty sure they're either a spammer or a bot.

Likewise reported for dangerous "advice" Peanuts are too high for anyone with HFI 4.7g per 100g (Source www.healthline.com/nutrition/foods/peanuts) so the maximum for an adult would be less than 50g (a very small handful) and then that's your total safe amount for 24 hours.. so for a child.. they are a no-go sorry. Many of us have for years not known what the safe levels are (and to be precise I still do not know exactly) however we do know that 2g per day is the maximum safe level, (Source Professor T Cox Addenbrookes Genetic clinic) There is a difference between the levels at which we start to feel ill and that which is safe for a day to day level. And yes I used to eat nuts too. It was a bad idea! If you feel like you have had enough of something then you have already gone far over your daily amount! This is much lower than any of us knew before, so long as we did not feel ill we thought we were OK. I was (I thought ) being very careful .. however I have an enlarged liver.. just how damaged it is I will find out soon (April 7th 2019 tests are being done). Be careful folks and above all else eat safe!
