Hi everyone,
I'm new to the fructose arena and have been reading all your posts. Thanks!!
I am not new to sugar and starch issues since I have one kid with CSID, congenital sucrase isomaltase deficiency. But, fructose has been a recommended sweetener in that category, he, he.
So, I have a 3 year old I need help with.
She has mostly been following a sucrose free and low starch diet for a goid portion of her life since her sister has to, but after she after she tested negative for CSID, I have relaxed on what she eats considerably. She now has a positive breath test for a high level of fructose malabsorption.
She does not fit the typical severe gastrointestinal symptoms picture of FM. She does have diarrhea, vomiting and excessive sleep and urination. Her more "severe" or impressive symptoms relate more to her developmental delays and excessive sleep. She is 3.5 years old but is the height, weight and developmental stage of a 2 to 2.5 year old (so growth is retarded too). She was late on all her milestones and currently is quite delayed in producing speech although her understanding of speech seems more age appropriate. They recently discovered she has sleep apnea and that she only has a 50% sleep efficiency and spends very little time in REM sleep.
With FM they say effects are only gastrointestinal. I am skeptical of this as my CSID kid had milestone and behavioral issues that resolved with correct strict diet. I am wondering if she actually has HFI. They keep saying that she'd have liver failure, liver abnormal panels or be much sicker if she had HFI. What do you think?
Is there a test to determine if you have the fructose enzyme? Or is it just a generic test?
Do you see your kids motor development or speech development affected? How about a lot of sleepiness? A lot of urination or sweating? She seems trapped in a time capsule, even though she is largely happy. She is now eating very little and wanting only certain items. Bananas is one item she keeps desiring and demanding. We will soon remove it from diet as we do fructose free for up to 8 weeks to see her response. This will be a fight though as it is the only thing she wants to eat now
Any thoughts? Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated. I am already excited about the recipes I found here at anyrate
