I am wondering if my daughter can ever get off her feeding tube. She is intolerant to all sugars (is this more HFI related to just FM?) she does horrible with barley malt, maltose, sorbitol, even aspartame. From what I gather, this is more FM. I guess we will wait to see what her results say. The DR really pushed for the HFI test because she has NOT been consuming sweets for years, and has been pretty much fructose and sucrose free for 19 months, this is why she may be so healthy an not as sick as she should be. I dont know.

Hi Sarah
It could be either, sorbitol is a definate no for HFI, aspartame is pretty foul for anyone really so a little sensative system will be unlikely to cope with it. My daughter is very sensative to fructose and she can't cope with barley malt, not sure on maltose. The best is to not use any of these things and start her, with your doctors support on a very basic chicken and rice diet. keep it simple and basic, no fruit, no veg just plain meats, rice old potatoes etc so her body learns to digest what is easy for it. Hopefully then you can get her off her tube, Chances are what you are giving her through the tube may have fructose elements in it.
Good luck. Charlie

Hi Sarah, I have HFI and can't handle any of those ingredients you just listed. I think most HFIers on this forum would agree--at least to some extent.
