Hi! It is terrific to have found this forum for exchange of information and experiences for those living with HFI.
I am a male 53 years old, have HFI and have always had a strong aversion to the smell of foods like chocolate, ripe fruits particularly bananas and oranges and basically anything sweet. For years I would simply get a severe headache, mild shakes, a bit of disorientation and a general weakness in my limbs. Lately my reactions have become far more intense: severe headaches, blurred vision, short term memory loss, confusion, difficulty trying to focus and speak, trembling in the hands and a general loss of strength to the point where I have to lie down or collapse.
Has anyone similar experiences to share or information as to where I might find out more about this sensitivity to the smell of sweet foods?
I have always accepted my reactions to the smell of sweet items as part of my bodies defense system and I am grateful for it. It is the fact that my defenses are now incapacitating me to the point where it can take anywhere from a few hours to over a day to recover simply from the exposure to the smell of something (example exposure to smell that came off of an orange as it was peeled more than thirty feet away left me with a full blown reaction and a recovery time of 20 hours) that is of concern and how much strong might my reactions become.
A side issue is trying to get people to understand that i don't have eat the food to become sick, the smell alone can do it.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone with similar experiences or leads to helpful information.
Thank you.
