On one of the other boards I'm on, there's a member who swears by taking one of those glucose tablets after you've eaten something you shouldn't have. Anyone try this with a child? This member is an adult and apparently it has something do to with the amount of glucose outweighing the amount of fructose. We're leaving for Canada next week and I plan to bring some foods with, but the border is picky on what they'll let through and I'm not sure what kind of selection I'll find in the stores. I thought about doing a test run at home before we go, but was wondering if anyone else has tried this? I realize the most ideal thing is to just stay on the diet, but for those times in a pinch it might be nice to have something to prevent sickness.

Hi Gretchen - I am a first time user of this site and I have a son with HFI. Kudos to all of you who have created this website! As we all know how difficult HFI is for our child or children to deal with. I am so glad to have a support group to chat with. As for the glucose tablets - I carry them around with me just as a person with allergies would the epi-pen. Any time that Jacob has something that may have had a trace of sugar in it - we give him one of those and it seems to lessen his tummy aches.

What brand of Glucose Tablets do you buy? I was at Target and they were all fruit flavored, so I was hesitant to buy them. Are yours fruit flavored? I didn't have a phone with me to call the company, so I thought it would be easier just to post the question and get the ones that work for you guys. It might look better on dates to eat a glucose tablet than to take out my Smarties .

Apple-flavored ones at Target are okay to eat. Not anything fantastic tasting, but no side-effects.

Hi,
Would that happen to be the Dex4 Brand? I believe that is a brand we have here.
Thanks!

Guest Gnome: Yep, it's Dex4--but the target brand. Supposedly they're the same. The Target brand says, "compare to Dex4 Glucose Tabs". I just bought the target brand because they're cheaper.

Thanks for this info. on the Target brand. I just received an email back from Dex4 and they said all of their flavors are completely free of fructose.
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, it takes companies so long to reply sometimes.

I bought some English Toffee glucose tabs at Wally-World (what my husband calls Wal-Mart--Sam's Club is lovingly anointed "Devil's Warehouse"). I'm a bit wary of trying them. I mean, how good can dextrose flavored English Toffee taste?

We use these with my daughter Brynn. I too carry them with me at all times, if we are in doubt that she's eaten something with fructose, the glucose tabs do indeed seem to help.
She's almost 9, and I am not picky about what brand, I think we have CVS brand right now (generic drugstore).
