After about a week and a half of things going great, he's back having the stomach aches again. I haven't given him anything new and have been diligint about this. I was so excited when he said he was feeling better. It's the same pain as before. The only thing is that even through all this he's eating like a horse because he says eating makes it feel better. I'm really bummed. He's been complaining since Thur night and it doesn't seem to get any better. Uggg!!

Gretchen, have you given him any limited items? Like spinach, celery, oatmeal, etc? Any items you have questions on?

He has had some oatmeal. I guess I didn't realize there was anything in it. He's also spitting up and having really bad heart burn so I think his reflux is acting up too. They had told me they thought if this got under control the reflux would be better. I worked all weekend so I'm not sure if he ate oatmeal this weekend, but I drilled DH into not giving him anything I didn't say he could have.

Uggg.. so what is classified as a whole grain and what's a refined grain? I'm already dreaming about crazy words like dextroglucose now I can add some grain words to my dreams!!LOL!!! Also, I know there was a post about a vitamin that could be ordered that was ok, but has anyone found anything over the counter that's ok? He can swallow pills if they're not gigantic.

whole wheat, brown rice, or anything else that uses the word 'whole' is a big no-no!
When you see something like 'enriched wheat flour'...it's not whole. When you see something like 'milled rice' it's ok.
Corn is tricky, and we are still trying to work out the other grains (there have been a few posts on it)...it's best to stay away from things you aren't sure of until you know better.
I posted a vitamin that I found at whole foods:http://www.supernutritionusa.com/perfect.kids.html
What about nuts? You know those are limited too right? Actaully most of them are just no's.

Ok Kristen, being as my mind is mush, I think I've made a big boo-boo here. I've been buying Natures Own Healthline sugar-free whole wheat bread. Can you check it out? I'll try to get back on here later on to list what's in it, right now I have to run Britney to school.

Oh Laurie - I wish I could have told you better news... is this it? www.naturesownbread.com/NAT_Varieties/Variety.cfm?CategoryID=8&ProductID=17 Ingredients: STONEGROUND WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR, WATER, MALTITOL, WHEAT GLUTEN, YEAST, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF EACH OF THE FOLLOWING: BUTTER *, SALT, DOUGH CONDITIONERS (SODIUM STEAROYL LACTYLATE, CALCIUM STEAROYL-2-LACTYLATE, MONOGLYCERIDES, CALCIUM PEROXIDE, ETHOXYLATED MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, DATEM), CULTURED WHEY (MILK), VINEGAR, NATURAL FLAVORS, CALCIUM SULFATE, MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE, YEAST FOOD (AMMONIUM SULFATE) * A TRIVIAL SOURCE OF CHOLESTEROL Ok, firstly the whole wheat is a no. When I researched the sugar alchohols I found an FDA document ( I think I posted it) that explained that maltitol is a sugar alcohol extracted from maltose, that it is largely nondigestable and that the recipe can vary to include sorbitol (up to 10%). So I avoid it at this point since Coley is sooooo sensitive still. Also, with these non-digestables it's hard for us 'newbies' to tell the difference between an HFI reaction and an item that just didn't sit well, which is what these non-digestables tend to do to some. And then lastly, I avoid anything that says natural flavorings. This could mean almost anything, including nuts, fruit, veggies to extracts that contain things like sorbitol...as long as it's used to enhance flavor & it's natural, it falls into this category. Again, since we are dealing with what seems like extremely sensative kids - at least for now I'd avoid it. Do you have a whole foods or a panera bread near you? They both have some varieties that are ok. Do you need help finding something else to replace this? KJ

Thanks for explaining natural flavors. I had not been looking for it. Zander is not as sensitive but, it is nice to know so if I questions something I can minimize or eliminate it.
Thanks Nancy

Well, this sure explains a lot!! where I was driving myself crazy thinking it was the formula being used for his pump feeds causing the diarrhea, it's got to be the bread!! Hunter isn't really eating (by mouth) anything except toast, so that's got to be the problem!!
Thankfully we do have a Panera Bread here, actually it's on my mother's side of town, but that's only a hop, skip and a jump away. Thanks for always being "Jonny on the spot" with answers!!

Ok, I'm just going to jump in here. The BU website does not have enough information for me, especially where the grains/nuts/legumes are concerned. I did not know that oatmeal was considered a whole grain, but that sure explains some unresolved symptoms! Thought I was being strict enough, but not so...
Is there a better resource than BU for all the no-no's? thanks!!
