Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the fructose loading challenge? We have just had it and I saw a heap of symptoms exhibit, however, we are waiting for results. She didn't go into a hypo as such which they were thrilled with, but we aren't sure of the results.
Just wondering if anyone else has had any experience with the test?

I hope your daughter is recovering well from the test. Was it an oral load or IV load?
My son had the oral fructose load and, as a result, was sick for months. He had very large ketones in his urine following the test, but I only know that because I tested him at home. The lab only did the breath test on him, which was positive. His GI doc didn't think we were dealing with anything serious. My gut told me it was a bad idea, but I didn't listen. He wasn't himself for a very long time.
When we did my oral fructose test we added blood tests to see if there was anything else going on. My breath test was VERY positive, but also I had changes characteristic of HFI in my blood work. I did not start to go hypo until the end of the test, but by then I was already about to start eating again. One would assume that if I was malabsorbing the fructose as much as was indicated by the breath test, my blood values should not have changed at all - it should have gone right through me.
The blood values that changed for me were AST and bilirubin (markers for liver damage), uric acid increase, magnesium increase, lactate increase, and phosphate decrease. My blood glucose went up a little bit but then was lower than my fasting level by the end of the test.
Again, all of you who have been told that your child cannot have HFI because they had a positive breath test - nope, not true. I don't know for absolute sure that I have HFI, but I do know that I don't have DFI. I now know for sure that the fructose is causing damage.
What kinds of blood work were ordered? I am very interested to know what her experience was and what the docs have to say about it.
Best to you and your little gal!
