(Or more kudos for how we're doing it right.)
I work for a health-information/behavior change company that was recently purchased by Johnson & Johnson. Along with purchasing my company, J&J also purchased another company about health performance. As a result, my company wanted to learn more about this health performance company.
So, today, a dietitian (I think) from this health performance company came to talk to us about life management. One of her topics on concern was leading a healthy diet, not over eating, and nutrition. I thought my eyes were going to glaze over during the nutrition topic, but her primary focus on diet was being sure to keep your glucose in check. I instantly perk up.
Her diet example was 3 meals a day with 3 small snacks in between. In each meal, you need 2 servings of grains, 2 servings of fruits & veggies, and 1 serving of protein. She said that humans need to eat protein and grains with every meal, but could really skip on the veggies and fruits and still lead healthy lives.
She discussed all the issues with hypoglycemia that we have here and said this was because our blood glucose levels dropped (from not eating) and we'd enter into starvation mode--which makes us then over eat (I'm sooo guilty of this). So if you eat regularly (3 meals, 3 snacks, every 3-4 hours), then you won't be as hungry, you won't binge, your metabolism will increase, and you'll have more energy.
Her example of a serving size is how much food you can fit in one cupped hand (for meat, the meat should be the same size as the palm of your hand). The size of your hand is directly related to how much food you need to survive. Bigger people need more food, smaller people need less.
Anyway, I wanted to get out these thoughts before I forgot them all. I thought it would be some benefit to the parents here (especially hearing that a dietitian saying people don't NEED to eat fruits & veggies with every meal). Of course, you still need the minerals and vitamins from them, but there are always multivitamins.
You could pretty much hear a pin drop when she said you don't need to eat fruits & veggies. I think a couple people gasped in shock, but that was all.
