I am debating whether I need to send my blood sample in to Dr. Tolan in Boston. I thought I would get a sense from you who have this whether I fit the HFI profile.
I have had many health problems since I was an infant and had much of my intestines removed when I was weeks old. I have naturally avoided sugar, sweets, fruits, etc. my whole life and always gravitated towards sweet tarts and pixie sticks since I was little. I have only discovered Fructose intolerance within the past few years even though I naturally avoided it because those items made me ill. (Even though my doctors told me when I was a child food doesn't cause a person problems.)
Because I didn't know how or what was making me so sick, I was getting it in my diet by eating some food items with it in as an ingredient like lunch meats, trying some veggies, etc. Over the years I kept getting sicker and sicker until I was down to about 85 Ibs and practically on my death bed. I had daily hypoglycemia episodes, dizziness, extremely low blood pressure, chills, sick to my stomach and constant running to the bathroom, osteopenia, etc.. The list goes on and on. I was a medical mystery. I was finally tested for Fructose intolerance and got extremely ill. My doctor apologized for putting me through that and just said to not eat any fructose (Have a 1/2 gram at the most a day) and now I follow the HFI diet. I can't introduce any items beyond this diet without paying the price. The DFI diet doesn't work for me.
The reason I ask if I should be tested for HFI is in case I should ever be in the hospital and to be taken seriously for how bad it makes me sick, and also because my regular doctor said for me to research this a bit more and she would send my bloodwork there to explore it a bit more. Since you know what this is all about, I thought I would check with you to get a bit more sense if this sounds like HFI or just a bad case of DFI. If the price wasn't so high for the test, I would do it immediately, otherwise I am going to save up for it. I'm not asking for a diagnosis or anything from you, just more of an insight whether this is a good direction for me to follow. I am 41 and since following the diet I am the healthiest I have ever been since I was born.
I should add my Grandma died at 57 years old of liver disease, but never discovered what was the cause of liver failure. I have a couple other family members with similar problems.
Thanks in advance,
Colleayn
