Hi, i was sent this link by someone on a facebook mom's group after i posted about fructose intolerance. My son is now 5 and for as long as i can remember he has gotten sick whenever he had chocolate. Instantly sick, his body rejected it within minutes. He threw up atleast 3-4 times a week. I put it down to a chocolate allergy and avoided it because i didn't want to put him threw allergy testing. As time went on more and more foods made him sick and i began to notice a pattern. It was anything high in sugar. He can no longer have cake or certain juice without being sick. If he does manage to feep anything sweet down the problem starts the following day with cramps and diareaha. When i went to my dr about this she sent him for a fructose test at the hospital. I told the woman administering the test he doesn't tolerate sugar well and before i could finish my sentence the drink she had given my son was back up and all over her shoes. This led us back to the dr who sent us to an allergist, who sent me on my way saying it wasn't an allergic reaction and said we need to see a pediatric gasrointoligist. And so we wait. So my reason for posting is advise.. i am looking for help of any kind..... thankyou to anyone who can help!

Still confuses me how doctors give the fructose challenge before eliminating HFI. It's REALLY not cool at all. Personally, I would have puked before even drinking the fructose test. Instead of an allergist or gastointoligist, you should visit a geneticist and demand a HFI blood test. At least get that test out of the way to eliminate the possibility. Until then, no fruit, no vegetables, no sugar. If you put him on the HFI diet, you'll notice a pretty quick improvement. You'll want to stick to grains, dairy, and meat products. If you're buying things over the counter, be sure to read the entire label.

Ditto what Colormist wrote.
The HFI blood test is important. Typically these are admisistered by a geneticist - the pediatric GI is at least a starting point. They should be familiar with HFI and at least give you the referral to the geneticist. In the mean time, stick to a fructose-free diet. This website has lots of hints, tips, and recipies to help with that.
Good luck!

My son still has not fully healed from the fructose breath test. He experienced some major intestinal damage as a result of the large fructose load. You guys are probably lucky that he vomited it all back up. I can't believe they sent you to an allergist! When I was little I was told I was allergic to Tang ... umm, nope.
I feel for you and the frustration you are experiencing. None of the doctors around here know anything about this and our nutritionist told us that table sugar was okay - we knew better, of course, but still ...
This board has been so amazing and helpful. It's nice to know we are not crazy - whenever Calvin, Sawyer and I react to something I think we shouldn't, I get on here and sure enough it is a no-no or a limited item. The list we received from the nutritionist was completely worthless ...
Best of luck in getting your little one well! And please keep us updated on your progress.
