Hi I am wondering if anyone can help.
My 9 month old baby has had stomach problems since he was born. He has always vomited a lot and had stomach pains, and from birth he was unable to be laid flat but had to be held upright. He was on anti-reflux medication from 2 months.
At 4 months he was diagnosed with gastric volvulus (a twisted stomach). This was repaired by an operation when he was 5 months. At this time he was exclusively breastfed. Just after the operation he seemed much better, was vomiting less, even slept through twice!
Then at 6 months I started him on foods. The first couple of times I gave him a food he seemed to be ok with it, then he would reject foods. I tried him on pureed apple, apple and pear, apricot, yoghurt (plain and vanilla), baby cereal, bread, sweet potato, potato, carrot. With all of these, except yoghurt, bread, and baby cereal, he would close his mouth, turn his head away and cry. He kept vomiting but the diarrhea was better than before the operation. Then he got so I couldn't put him in the highchair as he would start to cry and go stiff when I tried.
He just wanted the breast and yoghurt (but vanilla yoghurt, not just plain was ok for him).
I restarted him from scratch, going back to just breastmilk, 3 times over the next 2 months.
Between starting him on foods in early July and mid-August, he had about half a dozen major vomiting episodes where he would lose everything from his stomach then keep retching. He also continued vomiting after most meals, despite the anti-reflux medication. With the last 2 big vomiting episodes, I noticed this was after him having eaten fruit at the last meal.
I saw the surgeon and pediatrician. The surgeon thought he might have a brain tumor, but a scan said this was not the case. The pediatrician said to wait 2 months then try fruit again.
I did this and tried pureed apple again 2 weeks ago. Again he had a major vomiting episode and we were in hospital for 3 days. They tested for infection, scanned for blockage of the intestine and a recurrence of the volvulus in case the operation had gone wrong, but it wasn't this. Then the day after they let us go home the consultant rang me and said it might be fructose intolerance.
I saw the pediatrician again and he said he didn't think so because Hugo (my baby) likes vanilla yoghurt. He suggested I try a list of vegetables but not fruit. I tried courgettes and squash and he had another vomiting episode (but not as bad as with the fruit).
Does this sound like HFI to anyone? I am wondering if it could be and have put him on a fructose and sugar free diet. He has stopped vomiting and seems much more alert and clear-eyed.
How do I go about getting it checked? The consultant said they don't like to do the blood test on babies as they have to take so much blood. Is the DNA test reliable and should I push for this? Sorry this is so long. We live in Switzerland.
