I lived in Germany for nearly 12 months and I have to say the food is largely very good.
Steaks are always available but avoid the added sauces.
Fried Potatoes and Bacon is good! again its best to eat with friends who will swap if your meal turns out to be too sweet.
Avoid Sauerkraut!
Its white shredded cabbage and as such contains all the sugars that are stored in a cabbage. If you are eating cabbage eat ONLY the dark green leaves without the veins or stalk parts.
It has always given me a bad time when I have tried it.

Alot of bakeries here (family type more than chain) do not use fructose sugars in the bread. They usually use glucose, if any at all when they bake. Just ask and most places will tell you exactly what they put in it.
Wiener Schnitzel is just a plain fried porkchop. Dont eat Rahm schnitzel. it has lots of cream and sugar. Jäger Schnitzel may be okay depending on the restaurant.
Independent Italian/German Pizza restaurants will actually make the crust and pizza without sugars or tomato sauces if you ask provided they make them in house. Just tell them you either have an allergy to the sugar or are diabetic and they will do it for you.
And the beer is only hops, water and grain by law. No sugar to make up for bad brewing like some brands I have had.
Watch mustards. Like the Sauerkraut they add alot of sugar to it. One that comes to mind is the House style used with Weisswurst. Dark yellow with brown seeds in it.
