Do you HFI people have problem with foods containing fructans, like wheat products and onions?
Fructans are chains of fructose with a glucose on the end, and they shouldn't be absorbed (but may still be absorbed in a small amount). Many people with DFI can't tolerate fructans.

I'm fine with wheat products, but not with onions.

Fructans are also in chicory. On labels they are referred as "inulin" or fructo-oligo-saccharides (FOS).

Fructans are a isomer of fructose.

I can't do anything with fructans or any other "chains" of sugar.

Hi, tikitavi,
that will be because onions are one of the highest in fructose of the veg list, per 100g serving it contains 1290mg raw standard onion and 2020mg sweet onion raw.
HFI do not have a problem with fructans as a rule, that is an FM problem where the intestines cannot absorb the fructans. The HFI problem is in the liver and kidneys.

Ah! Thanks, that makes sense. It really seems more and more like I probably have HFI then.

Ok.. Wheat is not a problem.. unless I drink too much wheat beer! ;P Onions.. I used to eat them raw but not cooked, or cooked untill they were very well browned. I always found that onion that is cooked till it is translucent is by far the worst for me and can kick in a reaction very quickly. Most Indian curry's are made from a base that is pure pulped onion.. this is very bad for me so I eat the Tandoori or a dry curry without the added liquid (normally pulped onion. I am finding one or two Indian curry houses where they will cook food for me without any added sugar or onion / tomato. Nice I find that onions cause me a great deal of bloating and bad cramps if I eat them now.. not to mention bleeding. It was a great pity when I could not eat pickled onions any more.. I very occasionally fry a small portion of a shallot or spring onion (scallion) finely chopped in some oil and then remove it before adding the meat.. this provides the flavour but not the sweetness of fried onion.
