Thank you!
My husband and I are going to be taking train and bus around Germany to Berlin, Altzeschdorf (my father's childhood home), Ingolstadt, Baden - Baden, Leipzig or Bonn, Hannover, and Amsterdam (for my husband's relatives). Quite a whirlwind. We'll probably stay cheap with relatives or youth hostels. Eating is the scariest part of the trip. In the US, I buy food from grocery stores on vacations to avoid restaurants. This is also cheaper. All the pictures of Germany look so quaint, it is hard to imagine large grocery stores there...what should I look for?
Hallo Julie,
I recommend you
Erfurt,
Würzburg or
Heidelberg: beautiful medieval cities.
Why do you want to travel to Ingolstadt? Is there anything special?
Bonn isn't very big.
Köln (Cologne) is more interesting, but Bonn and Köln are nearly one city. They grew together.
grocery stores: Wal Mart, Kaufland, Real, Globus, Handelshof, tegut (I'll write you more, when I remember
)
Wal Mart: You'll find many, many American stuff with english lists of ingredients on the products. Also many other products in other stores have english lists. You will see.
Buns: Always buy packed in grocery store! Many buns and much bread is without any sugar or only with dextrose (I like buns and bread from "Harry" - no sugar). But pay attention, that they are baked!
sugar = Zucker
dextrose = Dextrose = Glucose = Glukose = Traubenzucker
peperoni = Salami = okay by producer "Gutfried"
Most sausages from "Gutfried" are okay. If there is sugar (= Zucker) in it, you will read it.
Normal cheese ist always okay, without any sugar. You have to avoid only the cheese, which looks like
this and which is for toast.
Butter is always okay.
Milk is always okay.
What do you like to eat furthermore?
What are safe dishes to order in restaurants? I don't like sauer kraut, so that is not a problem ;D.
Okay.
Eating:
You will find McDonalds anywhere. A menu costs about 5 EUR. But there is no free refill in Germany.
Burger-Bun: not okay
Chicken McNuggets: okay, with dextrose
Sauces: not okay
French fries: okay, with dextrose (in German: Pommes Frites)
Big bacon & eggs (eggs, bacon, bun): okay, this bun is only made with dextrose
Egg McMuffin (eggs, bacon, cheese, bun): okay, bun with dextrose
latte macchiato (few espresso + much milk = I love it), coffee, milk, cappuccino: okay
Coca Cola light (= diet coke): okay
Bonaqa (= water): okay
Powerade: okay, only with dextrose
Normal restaurants:
This is not easy. Always okay: baked potato, cooked potato, steak without sauces (there are some steakhouses, but not so cheap), Schweinemedaillon (= medaillon of pork), Nudeln (= noodles), Reis (= rice), Fisch (= fish). But you
always have to say "No sugar, please! I'm allergic!"
Often mixtures of herbs have sugar in it!
(a non-food related question...do you think the eurorail pass is a good deal? or do you think buying separate train tickets is better?)
I'm sorry. I don't know. But I will read about it and tell you my opinion.
