"Disorders of Fructose Metabolism
Deficiency of enzymes that metabolize fructose may be asymptomatic or cause hypoglycemia. "
I copied this from the Merck website, Every time I see or hear the word hypoglycemia I'm reminded of the physicians assistant at the local VA " There's no such thing as hypoglycemia. " I haven't been back since.

But that's beside the point.

Are you or anyone else able to eat Tomatoes, Rhubarb, Grapefruit and Tangerines? I thought these were a problem? My nutritionist said no fruits across the board, so this is interesting. But then, my nutritionist admited she knew very little about HFI. I am curious to see what you all have to say. Thanks

Fred,
That was a great summary from McGill, but I think they blew it at the end with their comments on tomatoes, grapefruit and tangerines.
I can definitely speak to the tangerines - we had a tangerine tree in our back yard growing up. My brother and I would often try to eat them, but would only tolerate about 2 or three slices before we had to stop. They are certainly less sweet than an orange, but they are much too sweet for me, and I strongly believe they should not be eaten by an HFI person in any quantity. I feel the same about grapefruit.
As for tomatoes...I have eaten these in some quantity prior to being diagnosed. There is one recipe I used to make that has tomato sauce (no sugar added) poured over the top of the dish prior to baking. I would tolerate this fine, but it wasn't an enormous quantity that I was consuming. Same with tomato slices - I used to eat slices here and there (in a sandwich, with sliced mozzarella, etc). I haven't eaten this since being diagnosed, but I may treat myself to something like this in the future in small amounts. I certainly will continue to avoid any jarred tomato/marinara sauce, pizza sauce, etc, but I have always done that, even prior to being diagnosed.

Grapefruit tastes awful, anyway. Who would want to eat that?
I think I had tried tangerines, they still taste sweet. I kind of recall them tasting more sweet than some oranges.
Like everyone else here, I also try to avoid tomatoes. I still eat pasta that has tomatoes in it (the chopped/whole kind) but try to avoid eating the tomatoes in the pasta (so it's just the juices that end up being consumed).
Almost makes me want to email the writer of that article and let them know they're being horribly misleading.
