Hi, everyone! Just back from the grocery store, an Arizona version of Krogers. After re-reading some of the recipe's and "brand name quicky items," I still came back with fewer groceries and more questions. There have been some great posts about corn products and where to get pure corn starch, but I still don't trust the labels on pre-packaged foods... Instant puddings, soups, and other products have " modified food (or corn) starch." Didn't risk it... Also wondering about "soy protein" - I would think this is off limits because my understanding is protein = germ = fructose. Any thoughts or solid experience with these ingredients? Sorry if these have already been answered somewhere else & I missed it in my perusal of (almost) every posting...at least I know you are a patient group! mary in az

Not all protein is germ. I can't say for sure about soy protein, but I do know that Regina eats it with no problems. And your questions about potatoes, Again, Regina has no problems. That is something that we don't limit at all. As a matter of fact, she usually has some kind of potato every day. And plain chips are also fine.
modified corn starch is also ok. This is one of those things that have never made sense to me. Why all corn products are ok while corn itself is not. It's the bran issue there. Corn starch, corn oil, corn flour, corn meal is all ok from a HFI issue. But definately keep in mind that not all the HFIer's are the same. Each has their own things that can and can not be handled. Most of the newer mothers are a lot more strick than I am since their kids can't really tell them how they are reacting. I've had a lot longer time to see what works for us. Since you can tell yourself it probably won't be too long until you know how much of what you can handle.
What part of AZ are you from? My mother is a snow bird who lives in Sun City in the winter. She just got back to PA last week. I'm going out to visit her (again) next winter. Tammy

KJ, Tammy, Fred, at al - whatever you have to say always helps me! I've been leary like Kristen about corn stuff for the most part. And confused about all these derivatives (corn starch, dextrose) that we rely on so much.
I have never been much in the kitchen, but I am beginning to see that cooking is going to be ultimately easier and safer than reading every ingredient on every package, every time. Thanks for listing the websites to order safe ingredients and all the great ideas for recipies. They should be rather simple to adapt for my little quirks.
By the way, Kristen, did you try the biscotti's you mentioned on another post? Are they HFI-safe? Also, have you had any particular flavorings from barryfarm.com that did not meet your expectations? thanks again in advance!! - mary
p.s. Tammy, I live in Scottsdale, on the opposite side of town as your snow-birding mom, but everything here seems pretty close and easy to get to compared to my native Chicago...

Big help, KJ. I would also stay away from fruit flavors and alcohols. I just didn't want to experiment if you already had some bad experiences. Just read your updated yellow cake recipe and it looks great. I get so enthusiastic reading this stuff and then the abdominal pain kicks in for no apparent reason and I'm afraid to eat again! It's hard because I'm always hungry and even hungrier when I log in here and read about all these taste treats. If I ever When I get feeling better and get started cooking and baking, I'll gain back more weight then I had before...wish I could share it with your little ones struggling to gain a few pounds here and there! Blessings to you and all the wee ones - mary
