Ok, so on another HFI/DFI listserve someone posted a Finnish Department of Health nutrition website www.fineli.fi/foodclass.php?classif=igclass&lang=en I have to say, it's interesting. I have been obsessively looking at it today at work. Everyone else is chatting about food, a bit sensitive for me, so I am playing on the computer. Anyway, I checked a lot of the foods I have a hard time with and those I don't. It was interesting, cause I keep not factoring in sucrose, cause I am DFI (and celiac etc) I keep just focusing on fructose. So, when I checked things out and did the math, some of the food made sense to me. I feel like sucrose is much worse for me than fructose for example, though fructose is still bad. But I can eat something with minimum fructose and be ok, but garlic or almonds and I am bent over. Just something interesting to play around with. Have a nice holiday!! -Suzi

Yes, this is why I want to understand more about why sucrose seems to affect me a lot. I thought if there is a certain amount of glucose it might be ok to eat. This is where I get confused. I would like to understand it. The website does have some info about grains, though not enough in my opinion. The other website you mentioned I have looked at too, but it often doesn't give the fructose amount and I am still trying to understand the fiber relationship and starch relationship to understand what I can eat.
Thanks for all of your help and support!!

Zueban, Just a thought, has anyone heard of Glucose intolerant? I have met 6 people who can eat fruit and veggies no problem but do not like refined sugar much and cannot eat "Mars" bars or anything containing Glucose! This is weird because Glucose is supposed to be blood sugar and how can someone be intolerant of that??? These 6 are just in a small area in the UK Midlands. As far as I know they are not related genetically. I sounds something like that to me? What foods do you eat? Sucrose will "Hit" me harder than Fructose but it is the Fructose that dose the damage. With Sucrose my bloods sugar increases for the first 20 min while the glucose is burnt off then as the fructose bites I crash from 10 / 11 to below 2.5 (off the graph when they gave me 150g intravenously) That HURTS. Thanks for the url (link) to the site it is interesting. keep smiling

Thanks for the thoughts Bill. I don't think it is glucose, though it is something to think about. I can't eat most veggies and no fruit. However the reaction to fructose and sucrose are different. Sucrose I get bloated, and fructose I can get bloated but more it's the big "D". Who knows, I can not figure this DFI thing out. What makes it doublely hard is that I am also celiac and lactose free, though I had different reactions for the most part. Now if I am mildly contaminated, the result may be the same. What I need to get clearer about is the flours I use. They're an assortment of gluten free flours, that I stay away from then trial and error. Thank again, Suzi

Hi Suzi, I can relate to what you are going through. I also have Celiac and am lactose intolerant along with this fructose problem. I also have a lot of problems with sucrose- and it too is different than the fructose reaction. I have been going through more tests to figure what is all going on with my digestion, and my doctor also thinks that it is a carbohydrate intolerance (sugars like sucrose, fructose, etc.) He did say I could have some dextrose & glucose. He was more concerned about the sugar & legume, high fiber carbohydrates vs. the starch carbs. (potato flour, rice flour, corn starch being ok). But basically it comes down to no gluten, fructose, sucrose, lactose. Part of the reason why I still have problems despite being on this restricted diet is due to Gastric rapid transit/dumping syndrome of the small intestine. Things pass through too quickly to digest or absorb. He has me on some meds to slow this down with the hopes I'll be-able to add lactose to my diet one day, and help me feel better with other foods in general that are safe. Here is a good link on dumping syndrome with a bit of a talk on sucrose & fructose. www.mayoclinic.com/health/dumping-syndrome/DS00715/DSECTION=2 By the way, did you happen to try Sorgum flour? I hope you are feeling better.
