I am soooooooooo excited. Kraft now makes Sugar Free Cool Whip. I saw it in the store the other day, so of course the first thing I did was check out the ingredients. It contains corn syrup. BUT, the regular Cool Whip contains BOTH high fructose corn syrup, and corn syrup. So this made me think that maybe, just maybe, it was plain corn syrup in the sugar free one.
I didn't get many answers through e-mail, so I just got off the phone with "Grace" who assures me that it is just pure corn syrup. No fructose added. Fructose is ALWAYS listed on their labels if there is any in it. whooooopppppeeeee.
We haven't tried it yet, but my next trip to the store will include cool whip.
Do you realize all the possiblites? Add pudding, pixie sticks, flavorings, or even plain and we have wonderful cake frosting.
Kristen, it does also contain aspartame so it may not work for Coley, but for the rest of us it'll be great.
Just wanted to pass this along.

Regular, pure corn syrup is ok. The problem in the US is that it is (almost) always fructose added corn syrup. Even Karo and things like it are HFCS. So if a label says "corn syrup" it can't be trusted to be pure. But since they use both kinds, I felt it was worth checking into.

My husband spoke with the HFI lab. He was told that corn syrup is very tricky-that corn syrup is usually just glucose, so it may be tolerated, BUT manufacturers of it may add other sugars such as sucrose–or who knows what else. Obviously, high-fructose corn syrup cannot be to tolerated.
They recommended that those of us with HFI be very careful with corn syrup.
They recomended doing what you did--calling the manufacturer.
I’ve tried a few things with corn syrup, and haven’t been sick, but everyone’s level of HFI is different.
I'll try the cool whip when I see it in the store-but I really don't like the taste of sweet things (pixie sticks and the like excluded) so we'll see.

I recieved an e-mail from the Kraft people again. They found more info for me. There e-mail said:
"I was able to find some answers for you.
Here's the information I found:
There are many types of corn syrup available for use by food product manufacturers. The syrup combination selected for use in Cool Whip Sugar Free consists mainly of the starch components of corn and contributes very little sugar, does not contain any fructose and contributes minimal sweetness. As indicated by the asterisk following corn syrup on the ingredient line, the corn syrup we use provides only a trivial amount of sugar to this product. Products containing <0.5g of sugar are labeled as zero on the nutritional facts panel in accordance with current regulations.
To provide sweetness, we use very small amounts of Aspartame and Acesulfame Potassium as indicated on our label. We can use small amounts because these sweeteners are approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. Therefore, one serving of Cool Whip Sugar Free contains 20 calories, 0 grams sugars, 3 grams carbohydrates and 1 gram of fat. "
So it looks like it is fructose free. I know it will be a big hit in our house. Tammy

Tammy or anyone else that can answer this... I have finally found SF Cool Whip here and bought it, but I am afraid to try. Ingredients include polysorbate 60 and sorbitan monostearate. Are these from the dreaded sorbitol family? Are these ingredients in the cool whip you have purchased or is the formula different here? Thanks! Lisa

Lisa, Fred gave you the best answer I have. All I know for sure is that Regina tolerates it well, without limiting, and she always has very good liver function tests. (which means no hidden damage is being done) On the label of the SF Cool Whip, it does have those ingrediants, but its under "2% or less of:" I was hesitant at first to try it also, as I never give her something I'm not sure of. But she was so excited that after I got the answers from Kraft, I took the chance (after having it in my freezer for couple of weeks, trying to decide). She does fine with it. I don't even have to limit it. When I open one for her, she eats it every day until it's gone.
Since you are the one that knows Nate the best, you are probably the one who will have to make the choice. How sensitive is he? How does what he can eat compare to what I've stated Regina can eat on other things? If your still not sure, but think it's ok, just try a very small amount for the first time. And then go from there.
The one thing we can ALL agree on is that this board is just a good starting point. Everyone needs to adjust/adapt to their own indivual diets.
I can't remember who, but I do remember someone else saying they can use it, also. Let me know what you decide. Tammy

I caved and finally picked up the SF Cool Whip. I noticed (this might be a new addition) that it says it "contains a trivial amount of sugar". I thought that was a bit rude... I mean, trivial? Like it doesn't matter? Jerks. I don't think a Nutritional label should have the word "trivial" on it. I'm offended just thinking about it. Who are they to say what's trivial? Needless to say, I still ate quite a bit of it over the past few days while watching sappy romantic comedies. Wheee! Now I know what it feels like to eat "ice cream" out of a tub while watching romantic movies! I did not get sick, but I did feel very apprehensive after eating it. A bit like I feel after eating SF pudding. Like, "heeeeyyyy... I should be feeling sick right now... do I feel sick? I think I feel sick... am I sick? hmmmmmmm..." But no sickness.

I also finally bought some of this. I used to try and eat regular cool whip, but after one spoonful I'd feel ill. No sickness at all with the sugar-free version. Kind of a weird aftertaste, but in all it was yummy. I'll have to try and mix in some pixie sticks.
