Am I allowed to buy stevia in America? Where can I buy it? Has anyone experiences?

I know they sell it at food co-ops. You should be able to find it online too. I asked the dietician and she had never heard of it so I would be interested to know what other people think. I would assume it is safe.

Hi Caty, I've never heard about Stevia before your poat but from what I've read on the internet it seems to be a very good sugar free sweetener. I found a german shop that sells it online www.stevia-de.com/shop/index.php?cPath=21&osCsid=1aa71064dff04cb2e1374368bfb36f50 but of course from the labels it seems impossible to check if there are also other ingredients. I've also read that it's easy to be coltivated and to produce the sweetener from it. I'd like to try that but it seems very hard to find Stevia plants or beans here in Italy. Does anyone has info on where to find plants or beans online? Cheers, Giorgio.

Thank you, Giorgio. I think, I will buy the white powder or the liquid stevia. I've heard it is the best for making a cake. The green leaves should be only good for/as tea. "See" you postscript 31.05.2005:I tried liquid stevia. It contains no fructose. Some of the people on www.libase.de tried it too. They don't have problems with stevia in yoghurt or beverages. But in cakes ... it tastes awful! We don't know why. We have to search. I bought a book from Jeffrey Goettemoeller with stevia recipes: www.authorsden.com/visit/viewwork.asp?AuthorID=739 . I hope I will find out anything tasty with this help. Cati
