I've found mayonnaise and tartar sauce at Trader Joe's. The mayo has no sugar, but does have a bit of lemon juice concentrate (some say OK and some say no, right?). Tartar sauce there has no iffy ingredients.

What kind of place is Traders Joe? supermarket? health food? Wholesale club? What area is it in?

Here is the site to see if it is in your area. www.traderjoes.com/about/index.asp There are a few stores in PA that may be close to Tammy - Kristen, I'm not sure where you live. It is a small grocery store with a lot of specialty items. I have actually found quite a few items for Nathan there like Pilgrim's Pride chicken nuggets, Trader Joes Fettuccini Alfredo (frozen), Trader Joe's Garlic & Cheese breadsticks, Trader Joe's creamy peanut butter (made with just peanuts and salt), etc. I only bought the Trader Joe's Organic Mayonnaise, since I'm not planning on making fish this week. Here are the ingredients for it: Organic Expeller pressed soybean oil, organic pasteurized whole eggs, water, organic pasteurized egg yolks, organic white vinegar, sea salt, organic dry mustard, organic lemon juice concentrate. Next time I'm there I'll write down the ingredients for the tartar sauce. From recollection, they are pretty much the same as the mayo, but substitute dill pickles for the lemon juice concentrate. I actually usually make my own tartar sauce by adding chopped dill pickles and a little pickle juice to mayo.

If you're going there, they also have some yummy tasting (trader joes brand) reduced fat cheetos and Nate really likes their cream line plain yogurt.

I have posted TJ shopping list in Toddler Safe Foods. Also, my mom used to make mayo - think she still does. I'll post the recipe when I get it from her. Don't believe it has sugar, but it may have lemon juice. I think I'll try adapting it into a salad dressing and see what happens. Will let you know if I have good luck.

I'm glad your finding that there are lots of foods if you just look. I have already put some of the name brands we use under that catagory.
I just want to point out to all, the thing to do is to go to your local supermarket, whatever name it may be, and plan on spending a few hours there. Go and read labels. You will find MANY things there that you didn't know about. Just be patient and read every label. Example, I've probably read 20 different brands of chicken nuggets before I found one that is ok. And, as in the case of "Weavers", you need to check each SHAPE of nugget, also. Pretzels are another example. Some brands are ok, and only some shapes are ok.
I know this is time consuming, but it will be worth it when you come home with a lot of new, "sharable" items. And then the next trip will be much faster when you already know what to pick up.
Quite often it is the local stores brands that are ok. And also quite often, it was probably made by the same company as made another store's brand.
I work for a plant that makes Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee products. One day we may run our name on the label. The next day we will use a different recipe with different ing and we call that "store brand". We will make it the same all day long, but put different store labels on it every couple hours. Maybe "Great Value" (Wal-mart) for awhile, then "Krugers" for awhile, then switch to "Costos", etc. But it is all the same. So what may be ok in Trader Joes brand, may also be ok in your local store.
Also watch the store brands EVERY time you pick something up. The stores usually go with contracts. When one contract is up, they may get a better deal from Campbells instead of ConAgra, for example. But that means it may have slightly different ing in it from the last time you bought it. This happened to us one time in hot dogs. I ran in, bought the one I always bought. After Regina got sick, we discovered that they changed and started putting corn syrup in them. It probably means that a different company started making them, but still under the same store label. So check them EVERY time.
Just keep looking. We are always finding new things in our area.

Lisa, That is also very true as we found out on here when Fred discovered that Bisquick in Canada contains sugar, while in the states it doesn't. Just a good reminder that even though someone on here says something is ok in their area, be sure to double check it in yours.

Just went looking at the Hometown Favorites site, and guess what I found (that I have had a hard time finding in AZ): Duke's Mayonnaise. That's the only bad thing about that web site. It doesn't list the ingredien'ts. So unless you already know the product, it doesn't help you. I didn't know dukes Mayo was safe. So I have now put myself on the "save some for me" list. Thanks for the info. If you find any other products that are ok, let me know and it'll help reach the minimum.
They do carry Lucks chicken and Dumplings. I keep this on hand as a quick "just heat it up" thing. I use the microwave bowls but I only saw the can's on the site. I can get it cheaper here, but if it's something you can't get in your area, then it's a possiblity.

Their ingredients are: Soybean oil, eggs, water, vinegar, salt, oleoresin paprika, and natural flavors. I haven't checked prices, but this may be a better site to purchase it, too. Usually it's the shipping price or minimum requirement that makes my decision. Of course, all you need to do is google "Duke's Mayonnaise" and voila! I was about to order it from Amazon(free shipping) at one point and then they stopped carrying it. (I figured why not buy a few books to go with my sandwiches... ) Hope this helps! mary in az

Can yall see me doing the "happy dance" right now..........haha I thought I had lost my mind and never said anything about Dukes Mayo figuring I was once again losing my mind and seeing( or not seeing) things when I checked the ingred. Being born and bred in the south I've used Dukes mayo all my life. When Hunter was first dx'd I checked everything in my fridge and noticed the mayo had no sugar but figured it was probably just one of those hidden things......haha. This sure makes me happy!! Hunter has never tried mayo, even before the dx, but I think once he tries it he's going to love it. For those of you that have never tried Dukes mayo...........it's very very good. Wow, this just made my day!!!!!!!!!!!

It Came! It Came! I got some Dukes Mayo. I'm more excited than Regina is. I just keep thinking of all the things I'm going to make this weekend. Tuna Melts, Potato Salad, the list just keeps going on.

Tammy, you are so funny! I got my order of Duke's too, but it's just sitting there - I am so unimaginative when it comes to cooking. If you are trying anything new, I hope you'll post your results. I have used so many of your other suggestions, it's all a great help. Thanks for hanging in there with the newbies! mary in az
