Hi everyone, I am a new member.. I have problems with my throat for weeks. I think I might need operation but I want to relieve my pain and increase quality of my lifestyle. All pastiles and lozenges that I know are with some sort of sugar if not sucrose than sorbitol, isomalt, manitol.. I find maybe isomalt to be more nice to my body than sorbitol. Do you have some recommendations..I was using a little bit trahisan, neo angin. Maybe to try with tantum verde? It all has something soš¤ It all started two weeks ago when I read in the label ādonāt use this lozenge if you are fructose intolerantā so because of that I decided to google HFI, been to gastroenterologist. I always though I just donāt like sweets, fruits but weakness after eating a little bit of something concerned me. Iām 23 years old. New to this journey and I guess we need to be detectives šµļøāāļø

I've not found any lozenges that are safe. I did find a safe tea that works wonders. You just sip it and it's instant relief. It's called Throat Coat by Traditional Medicinals. www.traditionalmedicinals.com/products/throat-coat-tea/I wouldn't drink gallons of it, but a cup or two a day might be okay.

There are plenty of really effective gargles you can find. You spit them out so any sorbitol etc is unlikely to get at you at all. Sorbitol is every bit as dangerous as pure fructose by the way! Mouthwash can be used effectively as a gargle but again try not to swallow any of it. If none of these are available then good old remedy of salt water works very well and is not toxic if a little is swallowed, just drink a glass of water asap. lol If you like alcoholic spirits like Vodka then a 40% vol alcohol will kill all germs almost instantly. If your throat is really sore it will feel like it is killing you too for a few min! lol Warning it will burn like hell itself is down there! I use a safe Scotch whisky, certainly not any American brand which all have masses of added sugar in them. I gargle to kill the germs on the outside.. then swallow to have a go at them on the inside too lol.. Best part of having a cold is the excuse to gargle with whisky. A good clean Vodka (Absolute or similar) will do the same job if a little smother. Drinking alcohol is only ever safe for HFI'ers in small amounts and then only when our blood results show a clean liver. This may take several years if you have not been on a safe diet before diagnosis and likely to take time to get your diet clean enough to allow your liver to regenerate. You have to be very strict and really stick to the only zero fructose is safe mantra. 4 g a day is the maximum safe level for an adult by the way.. this is really hard to get down to. That is around 3/4 of a teaspoon a day from all sources! That is not a lot! Any questions please ask the best and safest advice comes from those of us with the condition who know.. really know what it's about.. am I right Colormist? Keep smiling and I hope you are feeling well again soon.

Thank you so much for your responses! I am drinking thyme (motherās breath) and sage a little bit but I donāt know if it is safe. I was avoiding anything sweet because it was giving me nausea and that was it, but I see there is a lot of things that arenāt sweet but have something. Gastroenterologist who is one of the best in my country told me to google it. He doesnāt know because he has only two patients with this in his life, I need to do genetic testing to see whatās going on. I told some doctors before that I have nausea and weakness immediately after eating a little bit (couple of bites) of fruit, chocolate etc and they were like āokayā. I am also not fan of alcohol because of the sweet taste but never tried stronger alcohol drinks maybe I would love itš. Also, there is some traditional recipe when you heat milk and butter for sore throat it helped me. Since you mentioned liver I have never checked mine but I hope it is okay since I donāt have a pain and of course I need to check it.

Yep welcome to the HFI club That sounds correct and at a guess since birth? HFI causes Liver, kidney and intestinal damage and can also cause brain damage if far too much sugar is give for too long. If not on a really clean diet your liver will throw up horrible results and an ultrasound will show a fatty liver. This is normal for us and nothing to really worry about.. although lesions do mean you are going to have to go very careful from now on. The maximum amount of Fructose and Adult with a healthy liver can stand is 4g a day on average. When you are trying to get your liver to regenerate and heal it's self then much lower levels need to be kept to. This will sound horrible to you now. however you have got through the hard bit (childhood) and now should be good to have a full and normal life span with no bad teeth! lol I know of many of us in our 60's 70's and even 80's so having HFI is not going to stop you doing anything you want.. except eating those cakes and chocolates. Which are really bad for you anyway. Where do you live in the world? We have people all over the world who can pass on local knowledge of safe foods to eat. Certain foods can be safe in one country but unsafe in another. lol international food Corps.. you just got to hate them lol.

Yes, my first reaction was to baby formula. Iām glad that you mentioned infusion because I need to get my tonsils removed, I have never been to hospital, never taken infusion or anesthesia. I hope it will be safe, maybe I need to request glucose infusion? Iām from Belgrade, Serbia and because here I canāt do the testing we need to sent my blood examples to laboratory in Germany. š

Even when I would chew gum I would feel sick. I developed a smell for anything sweet, just by smell I can tell if for example bread has sugar or not. But everyone around me including doctor thought I just donāt like anything sweet. I decided to search by myself very spontaneously and I am glad that I did that because I need to go to operation so I think itās right timing. I am concerned because doctors here arenāt informed for safe infusion and anesthesia I hope I will found out in this couple of days because I am afraid with getting wrong treatment. I have some recipes that I have been eating that are sugar and fructose free and good for fitness If someone is interested.

On facebook there is a group called HFI in the Kitchen. It is an Australian page that specialises in HFI food. All suggestions are great. With regards to your operation, it is VITAL that your IV fluids do not contain Sorbitol. If you doctors need conformation about this they can contact Professor Tim Cox at Addenbrookes Hospital Cambridge. He is internationally well known in the rare genetic conditions area. He discovered the 1st Genetic marker to prove the existence of HFI as a genetic condition. I have messaged you with his email.
