I do not want to raise false hopes but a genetic treatment for HFI may be on the horizon.
I follow a number of hashtags related to HFI on Instagram. A post by an account named "metagene_laboratory" got caught in my net. This account seems to be relatively new. They may have a connection to "metagene.de" located in Germany (perhaps the posts belong to an Iranian scientist working at the German metagene.de).
The account in question has seven posts in total. All posts are written -I assume- in Persian language, and all the posts are tagged with "Tehran" as the location. Each post is entitled with the name of a genetic disease such as 'Pompe' or 'Galt'. I posted a comment under the HFI post asking whether they were working on a cure for HFI. Their reply is as follows:
" [...] Yes, we are currently researching the treatment for this disease with CRISPR method. My research team and I wish all HFI patients to be cured."
Then, I Googled the term 'CRISPR' and found the following Wikipedia paragraph:
Cas9 (or "CRISPR-associated protein 9") is an enzyme that uses CRISPR sequences as a guide to recognize and cleave specific strands of DNA that are complementary to the CRISPR sequence. Cas9 enzymes together with CRISPR sequences form the basis of a technology known as CRISPR-Cas9 that can be used to edit genes within organisms. This editing process has a wide variety of applications including basic biological research, development of biotechnological products, and treatment of diseases. The development of the CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing technique was recognized by the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020 which was awarded to Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer Doudna.
One can always hope.
