I'm just curious if any of you have actually met (in person) someone else with HFI, besides siblings. It's so fun to read these posts and "meet" other people who have the same food tastes. Who else can relate to pixie stix and banana flavored runts?? I'm thinking it would be fascinating to actually meet in person with someone who had HFI. In all my life I've never stumbled across anyone who had the same food "issues", let alone someone who knew someone. Have you all?

I've never met someone else with HFI. I've been getting more suspicious of my cousins, though. One in particular has very restrictive eating habits. It just so happens that her father is my mom's cousin and her mom is my dad's sister. So, technically (considering that her parents are from the same family trees as mine) she could have HFI and just not realize it. I tried to press her mom for details about her diet (I remembered her being just as picky of an eater as I was when we hung out as kids) but her mom insists that she doesn't have it.
And, yeah, my family tree is weird. I was mapping it out a few years back and very often the same two families (maternal & paternal line) hooked up together. But that's what you get when your family doesn't migrate...
I'm really wanting some banana flavored runts right now...

Now, this situation raised a new question in my doctors’ mind and just in case it has raised the same question in yours, the answer is “NO” I had nothing to do with this lad having HFI. Too funny Fred!!!! Colormist - that is really interesting about your family. The geneticist was really curious about my family history and whether or not our family trees overlapped. Makes sense with the recessive gene and all. For the record, I'd be interested in a meet-up. I suppose I should get my test results back, first. I'm hoping to hear from the doc in two more weeks.

Mike here-when sarah was being tested at the age of 13-15 years ago-she met another girl-about 5-7 years old, also named Sarah who had HFI-unfortunately, that girl's parents made her drink apple, b/c "what good little girl doesnt" and she ended up with liver problems I think. We havn't met any other HFIers--but close--see below, after family tree story. As far as Sarah's family tree, she has relatives on both sides from the same eastern european village, her father's last name is BURG, her mother's maiden name is BERGER.... We're both Jewish, I guess that's what happens when there are only a few others in your village-back in the day. We are a little curious about her first cousin's son who is 3, but he hasn't been tested. Her neice does not have it. We actually just met a waitress-who totally understood our food ordering issues b/c she has a weird sugar thing-as does her dad-they get really bad headaches and nervous-but they can have pure sugar like an apple, but nothing processed like sodas. Sounded more like fructose mal-absorbition. Her family owns a restaurant not to far from us, so we are gonna go try it. We'd totally be interested in a meeting-who wants to come to sunny ca Maybe around Easter/spring break or summer when it is easier to get time off work and for kids.

Regina's father and I also have a connection from the same family tree. Someone once looked into their family tree, then came forward with it. It's a long ago cousin thing that we would have never known without this "Bailey Book" as we call it (It's well over 100 pages of nothing but family names). Regina is the 8th generation from the original Bailey that came over from Europe. We always just kind of figured it's the line that the HFI is from. But there is absolutely no one else in either family with any kind of similarities. But then again, there are many "distant" cousins listed that I don't know. Also, the kind she has, they told me she would have been dead from liver failure by the time she was 3. And way back when, how many young babies died that no one ever knew why? So it's possible. The whole Bailey family thing has always been interesting to us.
Sunny CA sounds good to me. Summer is always good since kids are off school, but it seems everyones summer is always so busy that it just flys by without getting together. Easter would be a wonderful time for us. Quite often we go out to Phoenix to visit my snow-bird mother over Easter. Wouldn't be that much farther to CA. This year we were thinking about going over the superbowl, (Feb) since it will be played in the new Phoenix stadium which is about 5 miles from Mom's house. Of course my beloved Steelers will probably not be there since they have a new coach. When I do go out, I'll let you know, maybe we can work something out even if others can't make it.
As far as the east half of the country, I'm open for anything, anywhere. All we need is for someone to "take charge" and set up a date and place. Regina and I would do our best to be there.
And Fred, if you wouldn't have answered that question, would have looked suspicious to me. lol.
