There are many entries dedicated as well as passing references to popcorn on the forum. The conclusion I have drawn from them is that popcorn is one of the very few HFI-safe snacks when prepared properly and eaten in moderation. Yet, I still have four unclear points in my mind regarding popcorn, and I would be grateful if you could shed light on them:
1) What is the proper way of preparing it at home? The ingredients and preparation method I adopt are the ones shown in the following short video (the video is in Turkish, but I think one does not need to know Turkish to understand the recipe). We use sunflower oil and/or olive oil in our popcorn recipe:
2) Our son also loves a particular snack sold in Turkey. It is a mix of puffed rice and popcorn. Its ingredients are:
Corn (55%), rice (24%), palm oil, salt, emulgator (sunflower lecithine)
The product looks like as follows:
Is this product safe in your opinion?
3) How much is a reasonable amount of popcorn for a six-year-old? Our son devours a big bowl -together with a big glass of water- while watching his favourite cartoons every two days. He does not feel any nausea afterwards.
4) In a few entries here on the forum, "hulless popcorn" is recommended. Quite a few websites on the Internet, however, say that "hulless popcorn" is a myth. See for example:
Nevertheless, after the corn is popped, would it make sense if I cut out with a sharp knife the "brown and crunchy part of the kernel that stays nestled inside the fluffy part" that -as far as I understand- is the hull?
As usual, many thanks in advance for your valuable ideas...

Hi :-)
My 7 year old does fine with about 1 cup (popped) of white popcorn daily. I do not remove the hulls. I pop it either by using a silicone bowl and popping in the microwave (no oils) or I pop on the stove in a covered pot using safflower oil.
My son has not eaten puffed rice, so I cannot speak to the Turkish snack. Hopefully others can help with that part.
One more thing- I never give my son a straight carb by itself. When he has popcorn, he also has a protein with it. But, he has a history of profound illness and easily goes hypo.

Puffed rice is fine so long as it is not sweetened, as is Puffed wheat. I have eatne popcorn a few times but I have found I can "over do it" and start to feel quite queasy. however this may be either the type of corn I popped or contaminants in the pack.

And I apologize for my -very- late reply.
