Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone else gets this reaction to eating bread? I don't seem to get any of my classic hfi symptoms from eating sugar free breads made from wheat flour, however I get immediately so exhausted and sleepy I just need to nap. I've done a bit of research on why this could be but looks like there are a lot of possible reasons . Could be mild gluten intolerance but could also just be a spike in insulin causing tryptophan levels in the brain to rise, which causes release of serotonin and melatonin, making you sleepy. But I wasn't aware that this was a classic response of people with hfi but given the lack of research who knows. Also my glucose tests all came back normal so there didn't seem to be any indication there that my insulin response was affected outside of fructose ingestion.
Does this happen to anyone else?
Thanks!

Carb load does cause sleepiness. I don't tend to have this reaction, but a lot of my (non-HFI) family members do.

Hi Beetlebot
I know that there is a post in here somewhere from Dr Tolan who says that eating lots of carbs, like bread and pasta, is a bad idea because there is new research that eating a lot of glucose can activate a pathway that creates endogenous fructose. He recommended we eat as close to Atkins as possible. I don't feel great when I eat lots of HFI safe carbs......
Just re-located it.........The post is under Miscellaneous, Dr Tolan info and it is from a conversation Ziba had with Dr Tolan.

Hi Allison,
This blows my mind and literally explains so much, I've noticed I've always felt stupid amounts better when on a modified keto diet. Sorry for the late response, I am not in the habit of checking this forum regularly yet.
I will definitely go and find that post
Thanks again!
