Hi HFIers, Since being on this extremely low sugar and low fiber diet, my tummy troubles have disappeared. However my complexion is awful. While I used to get compliments on my complexion, it is now splotchy and spotty. According to Cronometer, I'm getting all my protein with meat, eggs, cheese, plus my carb intake is high enough. I eat a ton of butter and sneak in small amounts of peanut butter and tahini. I take a multi-vitamin and a D3. I could not tolerate broccoli or avocados or green beans. What can you recommend since many of you have been doing this diet longer than I. Thank you!

I wash my face a couple times a day. Usually with water, every other day with Cerave face wash. I use moisturizer regularly (again, Cerave). I have a pretty amazing complexion (barring the occasional breakout when I wear makeup), but the rest of my body is the pits. I scar easily and bugs think I taste delicious. I an also allergic to most things and will break out in a rash if someone looks at me the wrong way. I wear a lot of long sleeves and pants.

Funny that Bugs really feast on me too! There are possibly 32 variants to Fructosemia / HFI so who knows? At this stage we all are trying to find out. You might be in the "club" after all. If you are not HFI then plenty of green veggies are safe for you. Cabbage, salad leaves, lettuce etc. Some green foods are OK watercress and the green leaves of cabbage (white bits cut out.) Soft lettuce is Ok as well in small amounts Lower fat meals can be done by using fish and pasta with a low fat milk sauce (put plenty of parsley in it to give it some flavour). Steak or steak mince should be around 5% fat. Chicken breasts (skinned), Turkey is always low fat. As a fibre replacer use Psyllium husks. They are water soluble but not digestible so keep you nice and clean on the inside. That should help your complection a bit Oh if you are possibly of an age where pregnancy might be planned or an issue, even accidentally, please take Folic acid every day to protect baby from Spina Bifida. Folic acid will cause no issues with FM or Fructosemia / HFI and its important to be taking it before you get or discover you are pregnant, which is why I think it should be part of your daily supplement regime. Hope this helps?

Bugs love me too! I have been bruising very easily and any cuts take forever to heal, and I break out in acne often since I’ve been diagnosed a few years ago (I’m 40 yrs old, and I hardly ever had acne before I was 35 and quit trying to force myself to eat small amounts of veggies every so often). I also have been having restless legs at night. I had my vitamin C level checked recently (with routine labs) and it was non-detectable (again). My doctor told me that I was on the road to developing scurvy if I didn’t buckle down and get better with my supplements of ascorbic acid. Kind of freaked out, I went home and googled scurvy, and learned that Vitamin C defiency can really affect your skin, including easy skin bruising and poor skin healing (and cause restless legs). She recommended buffered ascorbic acid morning and night, in addition to a regular multivitamin. I can’t help but suspect that the skin issues are probably related to various vitamin or mineral deficiencies...

Are you taking a magnesium supplement? HFI diets can be low in Mag as well as Vit C. Magnesium deficiency has been linked with Restless Leg Syndrome.

Zilba I tried a Magnesium supplement once.. felt very ill for 36 hours after. However I do use a Magnesium "oil" spray on my joints that are painful and it seems to give some relief.. However that could well be Psychosomatic. who knows?

Hmm...we all use Calm Vitality Mag Powder. I use a small amount with Remy and he tolerates it well (helps with the constipation, too). I have found some brands of supplements make me sick.
