Unlike many on this board, I do like sweet things and of course stay far away from them. Before I was finally diagnosed, I loved sweets. Of course now fructose/sucrose makes me feel so awful I stay clear of it. A dear friend came over for dinner and very sweetly brought me chocolates made with maltilol. I know the BU lab lists maltilol as tolerated but only if not contaminated. I have tried ice cream with maltilol (I forgot the brand) and it didn’t work for me. So I tried two pieces of the chocolate and I couldn’t believe it but I felt great! I didn’t crave more- a HUGE sign for me. It made me so happy that I ordered online and I wanted to share the info in case someone else misses chocolate. I consider myself pretty sensitive. There are things people mention that I can’t have but I can have small quantities - and I mean VERY small 1/4 cup of black beans, 1/4 avocado, 1/2 cup oatmeal to not have a reaction. Veggies I can only do spinach and mushrooms. Anyway, I am enjoying my chocolate! I have max two bites or two squares. The company is Venchi and you can search by “type” and it is called Chocolight and uses only maltilol as a sweetener. I was worried to share the info in case it does affect someone negatively but I felt it was worth sharing because it has made me so happy to have a bite of chocolate with my coffee

I too still like a bit of dark chocolate in moderation. I just ordered some Chocolite. Thanks for the recommendation!

Someone posted about ChocZero that is sweetened with monk fruit sweetener. I found that it doesn’t have fructose and just tried one piece and I’ll be switching to this since maltilol does give gastro issues! Excited to have found chocolate I can tolerate. Apparently this sweetener isn’t fructose nor glucose.

What? No folks Manitol is not safe at all. Recommending anyone with HFI to eat it is highly irresponsible.

On the BU website it says maltilol is “tolerated depending on purity”. The nutrition label reads that for 50g (which is A LOT) as I have about 20g, that there are 14g of sugar alcohols- maltilol which is not sorbitol nor sucrose nor fructose. For the 50g it says 1g sugar which I imagine is from the hazelnuts. Having 20g, I have absolutely no ill effects and I know this because I don’t crave more and I feel good. It has made me incredibly happy to have HFI and to be able to have something chocolate and sweet. On that note, unlike some people here, I have not been able to purchase a bag of glucose that I imagine is not pure and therefore I do feel ill after trying to bake with it. I imagined that someone else like me with HFI would be delighted to hear about this chocolate so I wanted to share it. Will it work for everyone? Possibly not considering some people can have brown rice and oatmeal and feel fine. I cannot have either. So I’m sharing this info with love and hope it can bring someone else joy too. I know I’ve been incredibly grateful for the information shared on here.

We make safe chocolate for our daughter. Melt some pure butter in a microwave and put 100% cocoa in it. She likes it hot liquid or cold in solid form.

Most of the web sites supposedly for HFI recommend foods that are simply unsafe for us. Take a look at the Q=Wikki entry for Manitol en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mannitol Notice its very similar to Sorbitol? Fundamentally its the same stuff as Sorbitol.. therefore not safe.

There is no such thing as 100% pure anything based on organic chemicals. For example 100% pure solid Glucose (powder) is allowed by law to be upto 40% "other sugars" and still be sold as 100% Glucose.. so be VERY careful! Never imagine that what you are buying is going ot be 100% anything becasue its just not true. It might be 100% Coco plant material.. but no one can guarantee its 100% fructose or Sucrose free, nor do they have to by law. They only have to prove its 100% natural product from that plant. Glucose made from Corn (Maize) for example will have between 2 and 4% fructose in it in almost all cases .. because that is what is in corn naturally and none of it is removed in the process of making Glucose. See what I mean? 7 years working in a Quality Control Lab and 3 in Agriculture.. the knowlage learned in emplyment (and collage) is sometimes useful

We use Dextro energy as a candy for our daughter. Although she doesn’t like sweet, she likes to have it with other children. We didn’t notice any sideffects. What do you think?

The occasional couple of tablets are unlikly to be harmful if her liver is in good condition. Has she had a liver emzyne test recently? Scoffing pack after pack however is not going to do her or her teeth any favours. Maltodextrin is safe Posible the safest of sugars / starches, it being between a stach and complex sugar. Dextrose apears to be safer than Glucose always.. however I have given up counting how many times I have been made ill by foods claiming to contain only Dextrose. Not sure if this is because the Dextrose is contaminated or just not there. Dextrose costs about 10 times the price of normal sugar.. so it may say Dextrose on the label.. but it is nearly imposible to identify once mixed in to a product. I can imagine many food manifacturers just stuffing in the 1st sugar they come accros in the company stores.. like who will know?? Well us actually

There is a company selling "Fructose free" sweets and foods made in Germany.. I have had "discussions" with them about their advertising and selling foods that are FAR from fructose free (sorbitol, maltitol and even sucrose!) some including "real fruit flavours" They now have an "agent" in the UK marketing them here. They do no testing at all of the glucose / dextrose they use, to check its purity, and by what I understand it is simply catering grade sugar, so unlikely to be safe enough for us. Odd batches might be safe but there is no knowing if they are using a contaminated batch or not.
In all cases be careful! and remember once you start eating glucose or Dextrose you WILL get dental caries!
Avoid all refined sugars and you will never get any tooth decay at all. Which to me is well worth missing sweetened foods!
Dextrose is capable of stripping the enamel off a child's teeth very quickly indeed.. far quicker than sucrose or fructose.
