I have been meaning to mention this for sometime to see if others with HFI have this same reaction when they sneak a bite of something illegal like I did yesterday: 1 bite of homemade green apple unsweetened applesauce with cranberries. I tend to do this with anything sweet, be it fruit, 1 hard candy (straight sugar), or 1 swallow of regular soda....I get prickly, sore mouth tissues and a sore throat, and even sometimes it affects my voice, making it weak. It is like a contact dermatitis or allergy-to-sugars type reaction, not to mention the nausea, etc. This is the first, most obvious and frequently, dramatic reaction I get to sugar if it is concentrated. Anyone else experience this?

My 3 year old frequently says his mouth "hurts". I never can discern if it is reflux, a sore tongue or some other manifestation. I keep a log of his daily food intake so I try to connect the dots. Sometimes there is no clear link. He never eats anything that I know contains fructose, so I am not sure why his mouth would hurt, but it is interesting that you are mentioning this...You don't have a firm Dx either right? When did you realize you could not eat what and dairy as well?

I have been this way since I was a little bitty kid. Candy or some fruits, for that matter, as soon as I get them in my mouth cause an immediate reaction. Then, soon after I become aware that my throat is sore. My Mom told me years ago that when I was young I would beg for candy, then later she would find it in my pocket with only one bite out of it. I always have known if a food is sweet, I need to consume whatever it is really fast; because when that wave hits me at about 5-10 minutes later, I am going to be very nauseous. It tastes so good before that! I don't do that anymore -- but when I was young, it would make me mad I couldn't eat what my friends were all enjoying. [I'm one of those who is too old and fell through the cracks when it came to diagnosis...we know I am "fructose intolerant", dairy intolerant, + have food allergies; and have overlapping symptoms for HFI/FBPaseD and GSD...all 3 of which have been suggested over the years by various doctors as a Dx. -- I do use the corn starch drink with unsweetened rice milk at night and it helps with AM hypoglycemia which is a big problem for me.]

Seems more like an allergic response or chemical intolerance to me. Have you checked out cross reactions to your known allergies? A lot of food allergies can be traced back to environmental allergies with similar protein structures. There seems to be no limit on how many things a person can be allergic to. Sugar cane? The acids or other additives in sodas and candy are numerous and from many different sources. It can be so difficult to sort out. Palmera has struggled with allergies off and on and I've noticed she always does poorly when she starts eating too much processed food. Even if it's HFI safe, the additives and cross contamination I cannot control.
Edit: Just to add that GI symptoms including nausea are very common among allergies. Sometimes it's the only symptom there is. Allergies are commonly mistaken for GI conditions or stomach bugs. But metabolic distress should not be part of an allergic response. So this is always the struggle with Palmera. Is it HFI/metabolic, allergies or stomach bug??

Also there is mast cell activation syndrome and other chemical intolerances such as salicylates that are not technically allergies but elicit similar symptoms. You could check out foods associated with these disorders and see if they ring a bell.

Thanks Antonia, I just saw your responses. The mouth-throat contact symptoms do seem more allergy-like.

Tummy ache,
Does your intolerance for fructose end with the nausea or do you also have elevated liver enzymes, hepatomegaly and other live manifestations?
My son seems to have the oral response but he also has overlapping symptoms of GSD and HFI and genetic testing has revealed nothing, but the fructose-free diet eliminated severe symptoms and improved labs and ultrasound. We are hoping to find others like him and piece this yet-to-be discovered mutation together.
