I'm confused with oatmeal. I thought whole grain was no good? McCann's Irish steel cut oatmeal has only one ingredient-whole grain oatmeal. It has "beta glucan" soluble fiber...is this ok? New to this diet and want to understand science behind it. Thanks for any help!

Ok Yes soluble Fibre is a bad one if we get too much.. It is digested into Sucrose in the gut. There is also a tiny amount of Fructose in the Oat Germ and been as its wholemeal or more precisely whole Oats cut into bits there will be more than is say rolled oats. If you really want to eat a safe version of Oats to make porridge I suggest instant oats. In the UK its called "Ready Break" (which is the brand name there are many versions made by superstores.. such as Asda (Walmart) Tesco's et all. This is pure Oat Starch which has been dried on heated rollers and Instantly thickens with hot milk. It has far lower digestible Fibre and little to no Fructose. I had Porridge for breakfast most days as a Child and given that no one understood or knew what condition I had it was most likely the safest food I had most days. To replace the Fibre we need to have a healthy gut I take Psyllium husks, this stuff is a revelation and has changed my life. No more constipation! hope this is the sort of information you are after?

Thank you! I will continue to search for an instant oatmeal that doesn't have so many other ingredients.

So would Quaker Oats, with the only ingredient being whole grain rolled oats, be safe. or no? I didn't see anything about "beta glucan."

Only items of concern is really digestible Fibre level is this "Beta Glucan"? In the quantities we are going to be eating I do not see oats as a problem, Eating larger quantities of uncooked oats can be I think. When I eat oats cold uncooked I do not "feel" too good, however when I eat them uncooked I am eating many times the amount you would eat or could eat cooked. Do not get worried about anything used as an added ingredient other than "Sugar", Sorbitol, Sucrose, HFCS, Glucose, Dextrose, and a whole list of E numbers (if they are used in your country) E950 -E968 E150- E150d E173 E420 Sorbitol! E421 E444 E472g E473 E474 Sorry I cannot give a fully detailed list (there may be more you do not fancy eating.. like aluminum salts?) Look it up in Wikipedia if interested. Keep smiling
