I have a confession…I tasted (well if I am honest, about 1/3rd cup’s worth) some Italian sorbet last week when my maid-of-honor from our wedding + university suite-mate was visiting us after 20+ years of not seeing each other. We were celebrating and having the greatest time! But, oh, did I pay for that sweet tasting of sorbet! That kick of nausea…then the horrible muscle cramping and achyness that lasted almost 3 days afterwards and feeling-out-of-sorts. I won’t do that again…ever! It wasn’t worth it one bit. It had been so long, that I thought one cheat would be OK. HA!

It seems that the longer we're off fructose, the bigger reaction we have to eating it. You would think, with our livers in better shape, that we wouldn't act so severely to a slight indiscretion! It really is a self-correcting disease with near instant results!

I’m curious if others with HFI have these symptoms with sugar: almost immediate sense of sugar flush -- ie. warm feeling, which continues with swallowing all the way down into the stomach; followed by a feeling of nausea; then about 15-20 minutes later a wave of dizziness? I also don’t feel perfectly OK for a few days afterwards…but that’s not anywhere as dramatic. I seem to be getting more sensitive the older I get – more like when I was a little kid. I’m really, really good 99.99% of the time with my diet...Honest!

Warm feeling and nausea, definitely. The dizziness might be associated with hypoglycemia (not enough glucose in the brain to function properly). I don't get dizzy (that I know of!) but I do suddenly have zero energy and have a deep need for sleepy time. Drinking a glass of milk helps a bit. I refer to it as "a distraction"--don't look over there at the fructose, look over here at this yummy lactose! I did have a few years where I'd cheat and instantly regret it. I think it's a learning curve once you go 100% on the HFI diet. One thinks they can still get away with eating like they used to in their pre-diet days and their body is just not going to tolerate that nonsense anymore. I think the sensitivity as you get older is spot-on too, though. My brother (who is undiagnosed, but clearly has HFI) is not on an HFI diet, but he's noticing things now. He asked if brown (whole wheat) bread/crackers have fructose in them because he was noticing they were making him angry (code for "not feeling very good"). He's also switched to thin crust pizza with no sauce once he saw me order it a few times and admits that it tastes "a lot better". I've also got him switched over to German beers, which he likes way more than domestic beer. Special thanks to Bill for teaching me about German Beer purity laws! Undoubtedly, over time, your liver gets more and more damaged the longer we keep eating fructose foods. Eventually, undiagnosed, we would end up in a situation like Fred where we are hospitalized because we increasingly don't feel good.

When you are permanently ill you get used to the feelings of being unwell.
I certainly can detect smaller amounts of Fructose now I'm eating a cleaner diet.
