Hi, I'm pregnant and have to go in a few weeks for a gestational diabetes test. I asked my doctor for the prescribed bottle of Glucocrush to check out the ingredients and it is 50g of dextrose and natural flavoring (lemon-lime). I looked up on past threads and two women on here (more than 10 years ago) drank the 50g of dextrose with no problem whatsoever, while others cautioned against it. Does anyone have any more recent experiences with this and recommendations? Thank you!

I do not have particular experience with that product or gestational diabetes, however the flavoring will have fructose in it and it's also highly probable that the dextrose will as well.
Might be safest to assume that you're probably going to have a reaction to it. Could you bring along some safe food to eat after the test?

Hi Orchid! Congrats on the pregnancy! have you talked to your Dr. about seeing if there is another way they can check for diabetes, maybe not doing the test at all and having you monitor your blood sugars so many times a day for a while to see if there is an issue. I would be iffy about drinking the stuff. it is super sweet and gross and I don't have HFI.
Keep us posted!

Thank you both for your thoughts. I'll ask for an alternative- sounds like the safest bet!

Hi, I'm probably one of the women who described being able to tolerate this ten years ago (orange flavor, as i recall). I don't know what the ingredients for the drink are currently. However if there is fructose in the flavorings then that ought to be on the ingredients. I do find that fruit flavors nauseate me a bit usually, just because of the association with sweet things, and even if they don't have sugar in them themselves . If you want an unflavored version I would think they would be able to get something like that. There's no law that says our glucola must be orange-flavored, right? You might have to call ahead and ask them to order it in advance though.
Good luck and let us know how it goes!

I tried to find an unflavored glucose drink for the test and had no luck. The one offered by my doctor is called Glucocrush. It said under ingredients "natural flavoring" as the only suspicious ingredient and the rest was dextrose but from what I read here, all dextrose is contaminated. I asked the lab for an alternative method but they said they didn't have one so I thought I'll just drink it. I thought I felt ok after but hours later did feel hypo and I should've compensated right after by eating a bowl of white rice. Well at least that is done! Now my concern is the hospital IV. Of course I'll let them know about fructose sucrose and sorbitol and hope that that won't be an issue. I also will be taking my own snacks as I imagine the kitchen won't be too knowledgeable about what I can and cannot eat.
