Hi Just curious if any othe HFI patient has taken MCT oil before? My son still is having some trouble with muscle strength and muscle weakness. They are discussing using MCT oil before exercises that are of strenuous nature. We have tried protein and carb increase and nothing so far has worked for us. Please let me know if anyone else has had any issues.

Hi Kcchater,
my son is only 3, but I do remember when he was hospitalized they switched his formula( he was only 4 months old) to Enfamil Progestimil with MCT Oil. the thought was since he was undiagnosed at the time, that the medium chains were easier to breakdown for people with GI problems. almost like they were partially broken down already. In not sure about the energy difference though. It seems like they require less energy to breakdown than long chains so if there was a malabsorbtion issue this might be important because the medium chains are easier for your body to use. Im not really sure about using the MCT oil before heavy exercise. Maybe the thought is that since they use less energy during the breakdown process, that leave more energy for the exercise? not sure.

Abbott Nutrition has saved us. R drinks Elecare Jr for vitamins, amino acids, minerals and MCT. Expensive but insurance can cover if doc writes letter.
