I know that some people here have ruled out HFI and are looking at CSID.
I just want to let everyone know that there is a breath test for sucrase activity available to anyone, without a prescription. It is currently priced at USD129 (note that if you are outside of the U.S., you likely will have to pay extra shipping fees). The company that offers the test is called Metabolic Solutions. Their breath tests for fructose malabsorption, lactose intolerance, and SIBO are used by major hospitals, so they are legitimate.
I'm posting this here because the test is called the "Leaky Gut Syndrome Test," and it requires a little bit of investigation to find out that it is in actuality a test specifically for sucrase activity. The test solution is made up of sucrose naturally enriched with the stable carbon isotope 13C.
This is not a diagnostic test for CSID. It only tells you if you have diminished sucrase activity. It does not tell you if this diminished activity is due to (a) lack of the sucrase-isomaltase enzyme, as with CSID, or (b) damage to the intestinal villi, caused, for instance, by celiac disease, Crohn's disease, infections, malnutrition, etc.
True confirmation of CSID requires an intestinal biopsy. This breath test would be most helpful in either ruling CSID out, or in gathering supporting evidence to bring to your GI so that further tests can be carried out.
WARNING: The test involves taking 20g of sucrose. This means your body could be hit with 10g of fructose. If you have HFI, this will harm you. Thus, you should rule out HFI first before taking the test.
