So I have been trying to use the nutrition database to look up “whole foods” I think I am pretty good with reading labels and looking for ingredients, but I still get tripped up with the whole form of a food.
My son really likes canned northern beans and while I read the back of the can and it only has northern beans listed as an ingredient, I know that doesn’t mean that the bean itself is fructose free. I looked them up on the nutrition database and they said they are fructose free. So I started entering other types of bean and found that red kidney beans are not good, but chick peas are ok. So confusing…
Does anyone else have beans as a significant part of their diet? I hope I am using the database correct and that they are really safe? I know when people talk about their safe lists, beans aren’t usually listed.
Any input would be helpful!
Thanks

I think I read somewhere that all beans have fructose in them--some more than others. I do have black beans about once a week (in texmex food), but more than that and I would have health issues.
If he likes them and you aren't noticing any health issues, maybe just limit them to once a week? I don't know for certain.

I also eat black beans regularly and have no problems. I also eat Mexican refried beans with no trouble.

hmmm ok interesting. I havn't tried black beans, but so far he likes the chick peas and the white cannaloni (sp?) beans. since he is little when I open a can of then I tend to give them to him more often and then he may go a while with none.

Beans are high in fibre and there can be a problem with digestible Fibre.
In the small intestine it is digested and the end result is Sucrose.. which causes inflammation of the bowel and possibly a low level of Fructose ingestion not calculated in diet.

Hi Denverjay,
(hope you see this!) What's your limit on quantity of black beans per day or per week?
