Hi all,
My son, 1 year and 10 months old, has HFI. He was diagnosed when he had 1 year and 4 months. Since then we have had many doubts about food allowed, medicine and recipes. Here in my hometown, Recife- Brazil, he is the first case diagnosed. Unfortunatly, he may be developing Cow´s milk intolerance. I think that you can help us a lot!

We are the same as Fred, the only real concern is for vitamin C. The doctors always say if you find a multi-vitamin, good. But C is really the only one to try and make up any way you can.

I read that is needed to supplement folic acid, too. But I don´t know if it is true. I didn´t find any vitamin without fructose, sucrose or sobitol to give to my son. I would like to know if the hepatomegaly really reduces and if the growth will be normal. I´m really worried about my son´s health...

hepatomegaly, or enlarged liver, was the first real syptom that my daughter had. It was what started the search which ended with HFI. Her liver is now back to normal size. The liver is the only organ of the body that will heal itself and once the fructose is eliminated, it will start to. In Regina's case, the cirrohsis was so bad that the small blood vessels started to find other ways through the body, around the liver. This will always be there, but it isn't a problem unless any futher surgery is needed in her life. Then it is something that the surgeons need to know ahead of time to be prepared. Example: A simple gall bladder removal will have to be dealt with a little more seriously.
But as far as affecting her health otherwise, no. As long as she stays on the diet, all her liver functions tests come back perfectly normal.
As for her size, she is a little on the small size, but since I am only 5'2" and my mother is only 5"1", I would have been surprised if she were any different. She is about 5'. All the men that I have corresponded with (Fred, Peter, Daniel) are all "normal" for men (at least 1 is over 6"). So I don't think I would worry about his size too much. Now that the diet is started, the most important thing to worry about is what he is eating. I think the rest will probably take care of itself.
Hope this eases your mind a little.
