I am 38 yrs old and was ver recently diagnosed with HFI- the variant c.448G>c a150p type. I am so thankful to find out that I am not crazy and imagining or self inducing these symptoms. I am still waiting for a approval from the metabolic clinic to be seen and am looking forward to a nutritional consult. I have a couple of questions though: How can we be healthy while eliminating so many of the veggies?? I am still trying to wrap my head around this- I know I have a milder aversion to most of them (minus leafy greens). Do HFI-ers have problems with vitamin deficiencies? I went to see a well respected naturopath yesterday and she was stumped. She was advising powdered berries? Don't these have fructose?? haven’t been able to tolerate peppers and seem to react to asparagus. Now that I’m paying attention, I seem to react to many more foods that I had previously ignored, and I am wondering if now I am exaggerating my reactions due to my heightened awareness, or maybe I’m feeling them more?? Does this sound familiar to anyone?? Sorry this is so long… It really helps to have contact with people who’ve walked this path…. One more question… Has anyone run into issues with life insurance or any insurance challenges due to this being considered a pre- existing condition? I am wondering for additional family members… my daughter is 18 yrs old and had failure to thrive and has loose joints, chronic joint pain and stomach pain, and is not able to tolerate any sweet drinks. On the other hand, she can eat a chocolate muffin and certain fruits without nausea. As I am learning more about this, I would like to get her tested because I think many of issues may be r/t at least a sensitivity... ok, ok, one more thing. I was tested through the Natera company (the Horizon test)- it's a blood test. The max you pay out of pocket is $100. If anyone wanted to be tested but was unable to be tested due to cost... This is pretty cost efficient.

If you are worried about your vitamin levels, I recommend using Cron-o-meter (https://cronometer.com). You can enter in your daily food intake and it breaks down the vitamins for you and lets you know how close you are to to your daily vitamin goals. Most HFIers say this is a non-issue (outside of Vitamin C--don't want scurvy!). With my diet, I was low in Vitamin C (obviously--it's not like I can eat citrus), Vitamin E, Vitamin K, and Potassium. I'm pretty sure the "low in Potassium" is the reason why I crave potatoes so often. I took a screenshot of my results in this thread: hfiinfo.proboards.com/thread/1414/multi-vitamins?page=2I take a multivitamin to help with my deficiencies (Nature Made Multivitamin SoftGel for Her: www.naturemade.com/multivitamins/multivitamins/multi-for-her-liquid-softgel). Eating ANY fruit in any form is not a good idea. I previously adored a water with an essence of strawberry. It had no fructose or sugars, just an essential oil of strawberry. I was drinking one a day for a week when I finally realized my constant nausea was from the water. I stopped drinking it and felt 100% better. Asparagus definitely will make you ill. I don't like peppers, so I'm not certain about them. The more you remove fructose out of your diet, the more you'll realize how crappy you feel when you eat something that has fructose. Previously you didn't know you felt crappy because you ALWAYS felt crappy. Feeling crappy was just "normal" and that crappy feeling was your baseline. Now that you know what causes your illness, you have a new baseline and a new "normal". Any and ALL fructose and unsafe sugars will make you sick. You liver cannot process the fructose. It gets stuck there and just mucks your whole system up until your kidneys can get around to cleaning things up. This takes a very long time. So, no, you're not exaggerating your symptoms. You actually do feel this way and have always felt this way--you just didn't notice it before because you ALWAYS felt that way. Pre-Existing conditions used to be an issue before Obamacare went into effect. Insurers could deny you coverage if you had any preexisting medical condition (Hell, even being a woman was a preexisting condition and I was denied coverage for a year while they made sure I wasn't pregnant). Thankfully, due to Obamacare, now you don't have to worry about being denied coverage because insurance companies are not allowed to deny people coverage anymore or charge people with preexisting medical conditions more for coverage. Short answer: Technically and legally having a preexisting medical condition should not be a problem. I'm not sure about life insurance, though.
