Ok so I am wondering if anyone else has become more sensitive since eliminating all fructose from their diet? I posted a few days ago about my journey Ive been trying to figure out what is wrong with me and my bad experience with fruit and sugars and lots of veg has brought me to the possibility of Fructose Intolerance. Its been a month since really trying to eliminate fructose and i must say I feel like I'm more sensitive to it! I use to be able to eat potatoes no problem, all day, they were a safe food. but now that I have been strict I'm noticing some problems. Today I bought a bad of kettle cooked potato chips, just potato oil and sea salt. I ate them in the afternoon and after I felt tired... the fatigue increased and i ended up feeling absolutely exhausted, my eyes were heavy, i didn't feel like eating but at the same time I felt weak and dizzy etc. Not great at all. I felt like i was going to fall down or just fall asleep standing up. I felt shaky almost as well... Ok so I felt hypoglycaemic lol. Does anyone else get this with potato chips? I also had potatoes for breakfast lol, but they were peeled and soaked and boiled.
Thanks for your help! Jenni

Hi Jenni,
I can say that before my son was diagnosed as a baby, he actually ate fruit and liked it, especially strawberries. That was a worry of mine because after diagnosis i thought he would still want to eat those foods, and that could cause problems when he was older. I can say that since we went on the HFI diet about 6 months ago, he is more sensitive to foods. I do only give him what is HFI safe, but sometimes there are foods im not sure about and we try them and he may spit them out. Now i havent and wont give him a strawberry again to test this, but I think he wouldn't eat it if I gave it to him.
Hopefully someone who has HFI as an adult will also comment on this post because they can say from personal experience about the change in sensitivity.

I wish I could still eat strawberries. They do still taste delicious--particularly the tart ones. And yes, the more you remove fructose from your diet, the more sensitive you become. Even my husband (who does not have an issue with fructose) is more sensitive now that he's been eating my fructose-free cooking for 10 years. He has been known to complain if something tastes sweet when he wasn't expecting a sweet taste. Potatoes I do okay with so long as they're the correct variety. Red, New, and sweet potatoes are all off limits. I do love potato chips, though. I usually grab a bag of them if I'm out on the town and hypoglycemia hits (that and milk or a latte). If you don't have HFI, there are a few other conditions that have diets very similar to HFI but are more restrictive.

Ok, that may be why I'm feeling more reactive and sensitivie to foods. Dang, lol.
Colormist what conditions would those be? Or what are they called, maybe I should look it up. Also do you think if a HFI person isn't diagnosed early and they live life eating whatever and feeling off most of the time can they develop other systemic issues? Like histamine or dairy or salicylate related food issues that might go away with following low fructose diet diligently? Thanks so much for your guys' help!

I'm hoping Charlie will respond as I'm no expert outside of HFI, though I'm not certain if those medical conditions are ones that can hide until adulthood.
Fred also had a lot of medical issues building up until he was diagnosed later in life. I don't recall any histamine, dairy, or salicylate issues, though. Most of the issues are compounded around hypoglycemia, kidneys, stomach and liver functions.
