Went to my nephew's 11th birthday this weekend. I called on my way and asked about the bonfire--particularly if they would be cooking food over the bonfire. (Side note: my brother likes to burn things and will frequently make a gigantic bonfire the he lights with gasoline--clearly you would not cook over a fire lit by gasoline and probably would not be able to get close enough to the fire to even cook anything on it without losing eyebrows). My mom said, "no, it's not a cook out. We're just going to be having hotdogs and smores." So I reply with, "so yes, you are cooking out and I need to get food for the evening. Do you need anything from the store?"
Finding a store in Appalachian Ohio that has any kind of safe food is a near-impossible task in itself, but finding Hebrew National Hot Dogs AND safe hot dog buns would have had me screaming with joy in the grocery store. (Another side note: Do you guys also scream with joy when you come across safe food in a grocery store or is this just me? I found safe frozen pizza dough AND safe cheddar biscuits stored right beside each other at Walmart and I thought I was going to have a stroke. I had been looking for weeks for frozen pizza dough to no avail and cheddar biscuits for years.)
I managed to find two kinds of Hebrew National Hot Dogs at a local grocery, but no bread. Recently I have been using flour tortillas instead of bread for my sandwiches. I decided a flour tortilla would have to do. It was amazing. The hot dog was not messy, I didn't have a lump of gross, dry bread at the end of my hot dog burrito, and I could have put all kinds of messy toppings in there (chili, sauerkraut, dill pickle relish) without ever fearing a big mess of goop would ruin my outfit.
I'm now thinking of all the other ways I could use flour tortillas to replace bread products.
I also made some pizza quesadillas the other day. They were amazing.
