Hey all.
I am looking into HFI as a possibility for me. I have always dealt with what feels like hypoglycemia, but only with certain foods. Now at 28 I am struggling with a large list of GI issues in addition to the hypos. My question is this: does anyone have hypos from coffee/caffiene? I LOVE coffee, but in the last year my symptoms have all worsened and coffee makes my sugar drop faster than anything. Honey is the second worst offender for me, that I know of. I would love some input! Thanks guys!

Coffee first thing in the morning without any other food does cause my hypoglycemia to kick in. I get the same result from drinking water (without food) first thing in the morning. I think it just wakes my body out of sleep mode and starts up metabolism. My blood sugar always drops like a rock if I don't eat something regularly (every 4-6 hours). Coffee with milk or cream and a HFI-safe breakfast does not cause hypoglycemia.
Funny thing is, coffee is supposed to be an appetite suppressant, but it seems to work the exact opposite for me.
Are you drinking your coffee black? Are you eating food with the coffee?
Honey is NOT SAFE for people with HFI to consume and will cause a reaction right away. If you suspect you might have HFI, you should be avoiding honey.

I am just starting to suspect HFI. I was port on a low FODMAP diet which helped some of my symptoms (mainly bloating) but I was still having uncontrollable reflux and occasional sugar crashes. I'm not drinking black coffee. I always had it with half & half and table sugar AND paired it with a meal. Still, intense fast crash. Decaf doesn't do this, which I recently learned is because galactans (that contain a single fructose molecule) are only found in caffiene.
I also recently learned of two other family members who also experience this issue with coffee, leading me to even greater suspicion of HFI being that it is hereditary.
Hmmmm?

Table sugar would cause HFI-related issues regardless as to whether it was decaf or regular coffee. I have two cups every day (with skim milk) and I don't have any issues with coffee.
I had to do some research, but I discovered this much: Galactans are Galactose which is another name for Lactose. People with HFI have no issue with lactose.
I'm not sure of the quantity of fructose that would be in a cup of coffee based on the galactans-connection (which I have not heard of until now). We generally use the Nutrition Database (http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/beverages/3898/2) to help determine whether or not a food is safe for people with HFI. The page I linked to is the Coffee Nutritional Information. It has 0.0g Fructose and 0.0g Sucrose. It actually has zero net carbs overall, which is enough (for me at least) to infer it is a safe-for-HFI food.

I have had the crash reason even when code is served with no sugar. It's definitely a head scratcher. I read somewhere that code could be an issue fir some individuals with HFI. If I can fiND the article o wok link back. Thank you for your input!
