Hi Everyone,
It has been a really long time since I have visited this board. I got tested by the doctor at Boston College (whose name escapes me at the moment). My test came back negative for any of the main common variants of HFI. So, either I have one of the more rare variants, or I have some other reason why fructose makes me feel like crap. But, either way, I avoid fructose at all costs.
I recent found a group of people who have gravitated to an all-meat diet. Many of them came to this way of eating via the low-carb high-fat community whose primary concern is weight loss or weight maintenance (after weight loss). They just found that the less carbs they ate, the better they felt and the easier it was for them to maintain a healthy weight. This way of eating id often referred to a "zero-carb."
However, one of the people in this group has a wife who started an all-meat diet 18 years ago because she has severe Lyme Disease (age 26 at the time) and reacted to every food on the planet except for meat. This family has been eating nothing but ribeye steaks for 18 years now. They have conceived and given birth to 2 healthy boys (now ages 8 & 10). They all eat this diet and they all thrive. I was so intrigued that I actually interviewed them for my blog. You can read it here if you are interested: zerocarbzen.com/2015/03/09/zero-carb-interview-the-andersen-family/
I have also learned over the past few years that I am definitely salicylate intolerant. Salycilates are in all plant foods and some people with gut issues (I do have celiac) are unable to metabolize these naturally occurring chemicals present in most plants. I wrote an article about salicylate intolerance here: zerocarbzen.com/salicylates/
Similarly, I am also histamine intolerant. Histamines are present in all aged and fermented foods, including aged meats. This was a bit of a challenge for me because I was eating meat and still feeling like crap...LOL...however, a woman in the all-meat group I found had histamine intolerance and she recognized my symptoms right away when I described them and referred me to some information that turned out to be enormously helpful. Once I found a source of histamine-free meat, I experienced no more negative reactions to the meat. I wrote an article about histamine intolerance here: zerocarbzen.com/histamines/
I have no idea if there is a genetic component to histamine and salicylate intolerance, but is seem to be extremely prevalent in the Asperger's and autism spectrum disorders. I did not know my father, but I have two half brothers from him, and one of them has 3 kids with Asperger's and one of my half-brothers told me that they thought our father was definitely Asperger's. So, that could be why I have issues with these two chemicals.
So, I have some back to say hello to you all, and to thank you once again for helping me as I have tried to figure out what exactly the issues are for me, and to share with you what I have discovered for myself. The end result is a diet that is very close to what works for you guys, only I do not eat any grains either, and I cannot eat any ferment foods like hard cheese, or egg whites because they both have histamine. This has brought to a diet of just meat, butter and water. The amazing thing is that there are quite a few others who are eating a diet of just meat and water too, though for different reasons. It is so nice to know that a diet this basic is actually completely healthy long-term and to have others to share experiences with like this board dedicated to HFI.
If anyone it interested in exploring and all-meat, or zero carb diet, you will find lots of good information on my blog zerocarbzen.com and you are also welcome to come explore out facebook group Principia Carnivora www.facebook.com/groups/PrincipiaCarnivora/
Blessings to you all, Esmee
