Hello, I have been reading this forum on and off for a year and I just wanted to thank everyone for all the information because it has saved me so many times.
I'm in my late thirties and only found out about a year ago that I had HFI. It all started - maybe because my diet was different and I was more exposed - in high school. I went away
to a friend's house and ate an entire cake - to this day, my friends make fun of it. I didn't dislike sweets - although I was never crazy about fruit. Then I would have this terrible
binging that was so well described by ukbill in his post. Since then, I feel that my symptoms have only worsened. When I started taking a course in nutrition, I felt so terrible because I had made my diet healthier with nuts, fruits, grains and veggies. I had really high cortisol levels as a result (due to low blood sugar?), went to
every doctor in NYC and was told in the end that I must have chronic stress (after they ruled out Cushing's disease that is the only thing they know that causes increased cortisol). Then a few years ago, I took the 23andme genetic test when they were still allowed to assess diseases and it came back saying I had one gene of HFI. However they only check for the 4 most common genes. My mother is korean so it makes sense that this gene wouldn't show up. Then I read the symptoms and almost fell off my chair. Everything I've been trying to explain to doctors for years was on there. The only symptom I do not get is the nausea/vomiting for some reason. So I cut fructose out of my diet immediately and for the first time I think in my life, I feel really really good. I didn't even know what feeling good felt like! I got in touch with Dr. Tolan who referred me to the hospital in Houston which could test more genes. I have not gone ahead to send blood, since insurance doesn't cover it and I know for a fact that I have this.
I do have a few food questions - for those people who use pure glucose, where do you buy it and what brand do you use? I got really sick a few weeks ago thinking I could make my brownie recipe with the NOW Foods pure glucose and I was extremely unwell for two days after. I would be so happy to find a subsitute for the ocassional dessert, but not sure it really does exist. I haven't been as strict as I should be- mostly when I go out to eat with friends - which I know makes no sense. I just feel terrible after. But I used to be a foodie and now I'm just finding it a little difficult, especially when it's so hard to discard the idea that what is really healthy does not apply to me (nuts, veggies, beans). I'm trying to embrace yummy things like olives, olive oil and cheese. But if any one else could list foods they love that would be so great. Also aside from spinach and mushrooms, are there other very low fructose healthy foods out there? Thank you!
