So I have been searching for diaper bag snacks for my LO and came across pretzels that appeared safe. They were flour, salt, baking powder, a small amount of dextrose, but they had "malt" listed as an ingredient. It was not listed with the flour (where you might see malted barley) but rather near the end of the ingredient list. Is this malt flour, or might it be malt powder, as in the sweet malted milk ball stuff? Any guesses? Do I call the company and ask? Brand was Snyders if that helps. They were a shaped pretzel...seasonal...football I think.

Malt is iffy. Sometimes it's safe, othertimes it's not. I think it's similar to corn syrup that way--sometimes it's just a thickening agent and othertimes it's a sweetener. If it's any consolation, I haven't run into any issues with pretzels that read safe. I've actually had Snyder pretzels a few times.

Regina also does fine with pretzels that say malt. She's never had any issues with Snyders pretzels, either.

So far we have tried the Snyders sourdough and the Snyders gluten free sticks. They both seem to be fine, and he really likes the gf sticks. A great find for the diaper bag!
