When I woke up yesterday I was ready to give up on this fight to find things I could eat and actually get energy from it instead of a headache and my throat swelling! I have never been diagnosed with HFI because all the drs around think I have acid reflex! I have been tested for celiac and it was neg. I have had issues all my life and I am 54. So I am so excited to learn. Right now I am having extreme troubles with my glands in my throat swelling and bad headaches & bad brain fogs which leads me to be so confused! So I have been living on Ibuprofen! Which I am sure is giving me other problems! I did figure out a few months ago that fruits, corn was a big problem............I did not figure out it was also with sugar until yesterday getting on this. Da dumb should of caught that! Thank you to who ever started this!!

Hi Barbara
Welcome to the HFI Discussion Board. Could you tell us what foods you can eat without it causing you problems? I ask this because it would give us a better idea how much fructose you are ingesting.
I'm probably the oldest one on this site at present 74 years old and you can read most of the members stories including mine, in the section "how I was diagnosed".

I should also say that before Thursday I was also eating chocolate! I did not understand that it was sugar also. I read somewhere that you could eat the candy bar as long as the glucose was higher the fructose in it. I also was eating peas and mac & cheese. I thought pasta and cheese was ok. but now I realize it is loaded with sugar. I mainly eat beef, which we raise our own. Chicken, turkey and pork bloat me and I get a crazy brain fog

Hi barbra. Just a quick drop in will catch up properly later. A Fred says fill us in more with your history etc as it could be more than one thing. He can help you with the hfi side, I from experience and research on my daughter can help you with other avenues.
But quickly wanted to say the glucose fructose balance theory s an Australian one for fructose malabsorption and doesn't always work, you need to figure out what you have first

ohhhh that's exactly where I go that from! The Australia website. hahaha ok. At least I found this I think from that. Here is details of my health history....I remember as a child having lots of headaches & rashes in the spring and summer. They told me I had hay fever. I realized that was probably because we had strawberry patches and ate fresh fruit more in the seasons. As I got older the headache got worse and the rashes at one time covered my body including my throat. And I went to bed and prayed not to wake up! Also developed asthma bad. I went to several doctors who put my on many many drugs including steroids. Which then I thought it was from a peanut allergery. Four times in the last 13 years I have been told I have throat cancer because it is so raw and was so bad. Had the scope done to rule that out and was told its acid reflex!!! Just last year again I went back to another doctor because of my mouth and tongue burns so bad I can't eat. Actually get huge sores on my tongue. Same thing acid reflex. After that I heard Dr. Oz talk about food allergies he started talking about corn allergies!! I was like YES that's IT!! I got it I am FREE!! I had already stopped eating tomatoes base things....so after that I tried to eliminate corn! I live on a farm..love corn! I got better but I still had the horrible brain fog where I would actually forgot important things. Then I started having serious issues with my throat swelling to the point I didn't know if I would wake up. I just take lots of Ibuprofen, PRAY and go to sleep. I am scared to use an epi pen, what if that has something I am allergic to. I did go to the ER for a bad asthma attack and I did blow up huge from that so they filled me with prednisone. The lastest dr in May I went to just KNEW I had celica. Took blood sent it off to Mayo and it came back neg. so that is where I am at. Pretty much everything I eat makes my throat & glands swell in my neck. So I just take Ibuprofen (can't do that much longer).....I had an egg/toast/milk for breakfast! Works great! But I am hungry NOW! Getting light headed....I am in a sales marketing job and need my mind to be sharp and have more energy! So what should I eat now? When I am light headed and dizzy like I am now I run into stuff and trip a lot! Yep few years ago broke my ARM!! I am usually a very motivated positive person! But not when I have this brain fog! I hate this so bad!!! I can't wait to learn from all OF YOU!!

Hi Barbara
I just had a look over the foods you have listed and I see some that HFI folks shouldn't eat: Chocolate, peas, Strawberries, Fresh fruit, Peanuts, Tomatoes, and most commercially made bread.
The Mac & Cheese, Beef, Chicken, Turkey and pork are OK as is Corn provided it isn't a sweet variety and the amount is limited. Corn contains mostly Glucose and some fructose. As for the bread, either try and find a bakery that has a loaf that does not contain sugar or buy a bread machine and make it yourself. Try also to eat some potatoes.
When I read what you have written, I would be more concerned about the acid reflux than HFI. I used to suffer from bad acid reflux also. I had an awful time with it and it wasn't until my doctor put me on an acid controller that I was able to properly function. They first prescribed Zantac (Ranitididine) which didn't work very well and then they switched me to Pepcid (famotidine) and it made a big difference for me. Your brain fog and headaches could be from low sugar. Starchy foods may help that but you could buy some lactose which you can disolve a spoonfull in a few ounces of milk and drink that.
Just for your information, Ibpuprofen is an anti-inflammatory which is not good taken over long periods of time. You need to talk to your doctor about that and find a good Gastro-Enterologist to ask about getting that acid properly under control. There is no need for you to be suffering from that this long.
In order to tell if you are fructose intolerant, you need to eliminate almost all fructose from your diet for a few days and see if most of your symtoms disappear.. You can check fructose levels in most foods at the "Nutrition Data" website.
Hope this helps a little Fred

Yes it does thank you! But I was on the purple pill for 4 yrs. and two other kinds after that. I stop the corn products this spring and fruits this fall. I didn't realize it was sugar! So I still was eating sweet peas and chocolate. I can't find a snack that I can eat because of the peanut allergy. I am on the road a lot.

Hi Barbara
When you are on the road, why not carry a bag of potato chips with you, the salt will help keep the acid down. If I'm going to be on the road all day, I carry some soda crackers and cheese with me. I make them up before I leave. Each one is just two soda crackers buttered with a slice of sharp cheddar cheese between them.
Also, here in Canada, we have a candy called Rockets which are little tablets that are made mainly of glucose. They provide energy. You may also have them where you live.
