I went to buy mineral water for an upset stomach. All they had was Canada Dry club soda and tonic water. I picked up the tonic water -- thinking the only difference was the quinine, which gives it a nice bitter taste -- and went home. I opened it up and it smelled sweet. First ingredient after water: high fructose corn syrup.
So I'm guessing gin and tonics aren't safe, either, unless you make sure they are using plain seltzer or a different brand of tonic. Sigh.

Substitute Tonic (which are all sweet either with artificial sweeteners or sugars) with Soda water or sparking spring mineral water all of which if plain and not flavoured are safe in the UK and Australia. Be aware though most Gin, Rum, Brandy and Vodkas have "flavourings" added some whiskys too (and ALL american spirits seem to be full of sugar i.e 136g Sucrose per liter in Southern Comfort! ) If you are keen then buy a cheap still (sorry water purification device ) and make your own out of Dextrose and yeast then run it through the still to make your own. for Gin add Juniper berries to the strong alcohol and wait a week before removing them and watering down to the required strength. Hope this helps

I just mean if you're at a party or anything. Gin & tonics seem like a safe drink. Apparently there are pitfalls even here.
As colormist said, disappointing. Just one more thing to think about. I mean, it's *tonic water." Why, Canada Dry?
Most distilled liquors from brands you know and have researched to not have added fillers are going to be fine. I think we all have enough sense to do some company searches to find safe brands. I don't think we would think twice about the tonic water normally. Because adding HFCS to seltzer is a madman's game.

When you have HFI, you have to think twice about anything you eat or drink for the first time and remember digestion starts in the mouth.
As far as alcohol goes, the only thing I have been able to have without it giving me trouble is Scotch & Water.

What's your favorite scotch, Fred? I've been drinking Guinness when I'm out with friends, but it's kind of fatty.

Hi colormist My favorite Scotch would be "Johnny Walker Red Label" but I haven't had one for about 20 years. Maybe I should live it up one evening, or better still, maybe we could have a get-together of everybody here. I wish we could get everyone from this Board together somewhere. Failing that, maybe we should all get on an Internet chat room sometime and just shout at each other for a while. (LOL Just Kidding)) Who knows maybe we could get a few differences understood or resolved. What do you think? ? Fred

Oh Fred Just name the date and place and Regina and I would be there.
As far as screaming at each other on a chat, I doubt if that would be any different then yelling on here. lol. But a big face to face? I'd love to actually meet everyone here.
