hi! DD has always loved prawns. shovelled them down at a great rate. I have always made certain to get wild-caught local Australian prawns. she has never had a reaction, in fact the first time we ever got her stools normal for 3 days in a row, we had put her on prawns for each lunch.
however I recently got a large batch of prawns from the local supermarket which were really cheap. they said they were wild caught, but they're a lot smaller than the wild ones I usually buy, and they don't taste anywhere near as nice.
DD has started refusing to eat them. throws them around the room instead! when she had gastro she was really bad. she would pick at other foods and eat a little, but she would scream at even the sight of a prawn! (these are all from the same batch, I froze them in 8 prawn bundles). it's like she was saying 'those will make me feel more sick'!
the other night I gave her nothing for dinner other than these prawns and ignored her protests, so she gave in and ate a few b/c she was hungry. now I feel pretty bad because her stool was not great the next day. I suspect that this batch are indeed farmed prawns, and that farmed = evil.
does this match with anyone else's experience?

Hi,
I've always loved all meat and fish - except prawns, especially the small ones you're talking about - they taste funny to me. I had some the other week for the first time in years, as i was away for work and couldn't find anything safe in the supermarket - so, i bought some prawns as this was all i could find... they tasted sweet and within a short time i felt rotten, the same way i do when i've eaten something i shouldn't. THere were no added, unsafe ingredients that on the label, so not sure why, but won;t be eating then again in a hurry!

no added ingredients in these either. I think it's what they feed the farmed prawns.

It could be that she is too reactive for shellfish full stop and not with what was in them. If they are a reactive type / allergen sensative / food sensative then their body is likely to react more to regular inflammatory foods and shellfish is one of those.
Meg used to love prawns as a toddler then went off them big time and won't even entertain the idea of them now.
Also the other answer is just the texture, alot of kids just don't like it.

nah not the texture, she loves them (other ones) to death, and no family history of reactivity to shellfish or any seafood - actually it's one of the things that all of us say makes us feel really good. she's been eating the large wild ones since 8 months old - like a few hundred grams a week - one of my failsafe foods to put her on to get good stools out of her. these are just dodgy - even hubby says he doesn't enjoy the taste and he's not at all fussy. OF course they could be bacterially contaminated, but only DD gets sick from eating them, so I have presumed not. the rest can go in the bin and I'll go back and get myself some good Gold Coast tiger prawns to try in a week or so.
on the inflammatory thing - I"ve read that a few times lately - shellfish = inflammatory. I know that they're allergenic for people who have that type of allergy, but I don't know why people say they're generally inflammatory - do they mean allergenic, or is there something else to them that they mean? can you shed any light?

mmmm, moreton bay bugs are brilliant! especially when barbequed with lemon butter. and even hfi safe! might have to go get myself some of them. the privilege of living near moreton bay.
yes, the GC tigers are huge, and I've even got a local fishmonger who sells them raw WITHOUT preservatives - really a rare find. without the sulphites they go black on the outside and they look really funky - much more appealing I think.
