Hello all, I have a blood sugar question. I am trying to eat low carb and high fat diet with no fructose obviously, but find that my blood sugar is usually in its high 70s to low 90s, never at 100 or more unless I eat some rice. I am also breastfeeding, so it might keep my blood sugar lower than usual. What I'm wondering is this... is it ok to always be in the 70-90 bracket or should I add more carbs? Thanks for your input! Beth

Hi
Ask your doctor that question. none of us can do that.

All I want to know is whether or not you guys take your blood sugar on daily basis and what the numbers are when you feel good and symptom-free. If doctors were any help, I wouldn't be on this forum.

Hi vintagesf, from my nutrition training all I can tell you is that IF you feel absolutely fine and are not suffering from any lethargy, dizziness, shaking or unusual sweats, then there's no reason to be concerned that blood sugar is too low. If you feel that you must take your measurements, then knowing that anything over 64.4 is the equivalent of what the lab tests consider 'normal' here in Australia might help you relax about it. A low carb, high fat diet is designed to keep your bsl low, and it looks like it's working for you. As long as you're sure that the levels are not causing symptoms and are not low due to fructose ingestion, then I wouldn't worry at all. Don't take my advice over that of a doctor however.
I"ve been breastfeeding for most of the last 6 years and it does not cause me to feel any symptoms of hypoglycaemia, though pregnancy often does.

out of interest - what are you eating on your diet if it's low carb? how are you making sure you're not getting too much protein for your kidneys? (I'm keen on doing same)

As Fred has said, this isn't really something we can answer on this board as it is not really an HFI issue and none of us are doctors. I know alot with HFI, or indeed any sugar malabsorption can get episodes of hypoglycemia it isn't a regular thing to test your blood sugar and isn't a prescribed course of action. Therefore this is something you must check back with your doctor about, especially if you are breastfeeding at the moment.

Fred's comment gets my vote too!
I do not regularly take my blood sugar reading but back in 1981 as part of my diagnosis for HFI I took it regularly for about 3 weeks. ( I had very sore finger ends for months afterwards. ;( )
I felt fine even when my blood levels dropped, as a result of lack of food not as a result of eating Fructose, to about 5 (50 on the USA scale) I felt a bit light headed perhaps but still fine.
Conversely I sometimes had brain fog feeling and being unwell etc after eating something containing Fructose even though my blood sugar level did not drop as a result of eating the bad food, I think this was because my blood sugar was being supported by the amount of fast release carbs in the meal.
So the Unwell feeling and brain fog were a result of the poisons from the partly metabolized Fructose in my system and not as a result of being Hypo.
